Canada's 150-minute 'standard' in physical education: a consideration of research evidence related to physical education instructional time
In Volume 10 Issue 3, 2019 of the Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education Journal, Robinson and colleagues focus on claims that are made about the optimal amount of curriculum time dedicated to physical education. Set in the backdrop of the Canadian recommendation that 150 minute of weekly instructional time be spent in physical education, the authors query the relationship between instructional time in and optimal outcomes in physical education.
In their trawling of the research literature, they conclude that there is very little empirical evidence of a direct relationship between instructional time and commonly espoused health and learning outcomes. While the authors outwardly endorse the regular allocation of time to physical education in the school curriculum, they advocate for a more sophisticated account of how optimal provision might be understood and practised.
