Marigold the sheep was pregnant and abandoned—left to survive on her own when her owners moved away. Marigold was rescued by ACHS’s website/social media pro, Sophie Stockum. | | |
ACHS volunteer Carol Waltz has rescued many sheep over the years, and happily gave Marigold a home. She also gave her a job doing great work interacting with kids at Pivot Point Pediatric Therapies.
Marigold has now delivered a healthy, adorable baby girl who will grow up along with her mom to be loved by all the families who visit. Our mission put into action!

ACHS volunteers recently attended a workshop on the link between domestic violence, child abuse, and animal cruelty. Our Humane Agent, Andy MacDonald (pictured) was one of the presenters, as was Shelley Lieberman, owner of Friendly Paws.
| |
The workshop highlighted Ohio’s Cross-Reporting Law (2021). This law requires professionals to report suspected animal abuse to humane authorities and requires law enforcement and animal officials to report suspected child abuse, reinforcing that when one form of abuse is present, others may be as well.
Key signs of animal neglect discussed included poor body condition, injuries, extreme fear, lack of food/water, unsafe or filthy living conditions, and prolonged confinement or chaining.
Attendees were reminded to report concerns promptly:
Animal abuse: contact the local humane society, dog warden, or law enforcement.
Child abuse: call 855-642-4453 (855-O-H-CHILD)
Elder abuse: call 1-855-644-6277 (1-855-OHIO-APS)
The training emphasized awareness, timely reporting, and collaboration to better protect both people and animals.
Experience points to a link between abuse of people and abuse of animals. The concept of “The Link” was very much a focus of discussion in this workshop. To learn more about this:

| | Cain is our longest resident, and more than anything we want to see him find a home of his own. He’s safe and loved in a foster home, but still waiting for the forever family he’s never had. | |
When Cain first came to us, it was clear he hadn’t known much kindness. He had spent much of his life chained outside, without the comfort every dog deserves.
Even then his loving, excited personality was waiting to shine. With time, care, and the support of his foster family, Cain has completely come into his own: he’s affectionate, eager, and full of life. He gets excited to see his people, leans in for attention, and has fully embraced the joys of indoor living (especially cozy blankets).
| | |
Cain would do best in a quiet home with no other animals, where he can truly relax and feel secure. He has so much love to give and has been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance.
He has waited longer than any dog should. It’s his turn.
Volunteers, let’s find Cain the forever home he needs!

At just 3.5 years old, Leo the Mastiff is a beautiful mix of strength and sweetness. While he may look big and rugged at first glance, his true personality is all heart. After spending much of his life outdoors, Leo has made it clear that he much prefers the comforts of indoor living. His favorite place is a cozy bed where he can relax and feel safe.
Leo has a calm and gentle nature. He enjoys walking alongside other dogs and makes a wonderful companion on quiet strolls. At home, he would likely be happiest as the only dog, soaking up all the love and attention, while still enjoying occasional walks with canine friends.
This sweet boy also loves car rides and is always happy to join you on an adventure. When it is time to settle in, Leo is all about cuddles and being close to his person.
Leo is looking for a home where he can fully enjoy the indoor life he loves, with someone who appreciates a loyal and affectionate companion.
If you are ready to welcome a big, loving dog into your life, Leo is ready to meet you!

Chicken is a majestic 3-year-old feline who has absolutely no idea just how special he truly is. With his gentle nature and quiet charm, he may be a little shy at first, preferring to take his time getting comfortable. But with a bit of patience, he blossoms into an incredibly sweet and loyal companion.
Once Chicken warms up, he loves being near his people and offering calm, comforting company. Whether he is lounging nearby or soaking up gentle pets, he is a big, lovable chunk who is impossible not to adore.
We are already a little jealous of whoever gets to bring him home, because cats like Chicken do not come around every day. Maybe that someone is you?

Savannah and Sarah are a bonded pair, who need to stay together. They’re 10 months old and very, very friendly. They’ll make wonderful lap cats but they’re fiercely independent: they’ll decide when it’s lap time and don’t want to be picked up! :) They are our longest-term kitty residents.

Meet Clark, our fearless 16-week-old daredevil!
If you’ve been following our adventures, you may have seen that Clark recently fractured his growth plate during one of his “extreme sports” moments. This brave little guy was rocking a cast until mid-March, but that didn't slow his sweet spirit one bit. And now the cast is finally off, hooray!
More than daring, Clark is an easygoing, affectionate guy who would love nothing more than to find the very best forever home. He’s expected to be ready for adoption soon, and we can’t wait to see him thriving with his new family.

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals. We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.
We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.
We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.
Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
