Walmart Garden Center kitties

This weekend, Chad Keller and Mary worked to safely trap a gray stray cat and her four kittens at Walmart. This little family was on a top shelf in Walmart’s outdoor garden center.

They’re calling the mama cat Novalee, after the movie Where the Heart Is (2000). In that film a young woman named Novalee gives birth and briefly lives in a Walmart after being abandoned—a fitting parallel to this stray mom raising her kittens at the store.

Over three days, traps were set with food to encourage the mom to enter. The kittens could have been collected separately, but Mary and Chad chose to wait until the mother was also safely captured to prevent future litters.

With persistence and support from Walmart employees, the Novalee was successfully trapped early Monday morning. She and her kittens are now safe and being cared for.

Special thanks to Tina Norman for coordinating donated supplies for these cats and for all our daily animal needs—as well as the needs of the Athens County Dog Shelter.

We appreciate everyone who contributed to a positive outcome for this family.

Birds of a feather in need

A community member who recently passed away left behind several incredible exotic birds now in need of care.

Caring for birds, especially those with high intelligence, is no small task. They require specialized veterinary care and a strong understanding of their unique physical and social needs.

These particular birds are social and very sweet, though some may have picked up a bit of colorful language from their previous owner.

We are working to ensure they receive the care and placement they need.

Help us start a Fundraising Committee

We’re looking to start a Fundraising Committee, and we hope some of our amazing supporters may be interested in helping.

Considering all the incredible work we’re getting done now, imagine how much more we could accomplish by expanding our efforts. A dedicated fundraising team would help us increase our impact and better support the animals in our care.

If you’re interested in helping establish this committee, please reach out to Mary Connolly at mary@athenshumane.org.

Thank you for being part of what makes this work possible!

Sandy Cheeks

All the way from Bikini Bottom to your living room, Sandy Cheeks is on a mission to find her forever family and she’s bringing plenty of charm with her! With her irresistibly chunky cheeks and sweet, gentle nature, it’s easy to see how she got her name.

Sandy is the definition of easygoing. She takes life at her own relaxed pace, happy to lounge nearby, soak up affection, and keep you company without asking for much in return. Whether you’re having a quiet night in or a lazy weekend morning, she’ll be right there, adding a little extra warmth and love to your day.

Her calm demeanor makes her a wonderful fit for a variety of homes, and her affectionate personality means she bonds quickly with her people. Of course, those adorable cheeks are just the bonus, you’ll fall in love with her kind heart even faster.

If you’re looking for a laid-back, loving companion who traveled far and wide just to meet you, Sandy Cheeks is ready to settle in and make herself at home right in your heart.

Marshmallow

Soft, sweet, and full of personality, Marshmallow lives up to her name in the best way. This lovely girl came in with her many brothers (who have all since found their homes!), but she quickly made one thing clear: she’s not here to share the spotlight, she is the spotlight.

Marshmallow has a gentle, affectionate nature and absolutely adores her people. Whether she’s curling up beside you for a cozy nap or following you around like your fluffy little shadow, she thrives on human connection and will happily soak up all the love you’re willing to give. In return, she’ll reward you with endless sweetness and companionship.

While she can tolerate another calm housemate, Marshmallow would truly shine as the center of your world. She’s looking for a home where she can reign supreme.

If you’re searching for a loyal, loving companion who will fill your home with warmth, Marshmallow is ready to claim her throne in your heart.

Fabio

Fabio is a 3-year-old gentle and quiet boy with a very sweet nature. He may be a little shy at first and will need some time to feel comfortable in a new home, but once he warms up he becomes a loving and affectionate companion. He enjoys being near his people and shows his affection in calm and subtle ways.

Fabio would do best in a peaceful home where he can settle in at his own pace. He is not a fan of dogs, but he does enjoy the company of other cats and would likely do well with a feline friend.

With a little patience, Fabio will form a strong bond and make a loyal and comforting addition to the right home.

Leo

At just 3.5 years old, Leo the Mastiff is a beautiful mix of strength and sweetness. While he may look big and rugged at first glance, his true personality is all heart. After spending much of his life outdoors, Leo has made it clear that he much prefers the comforts of indoor living. His favorite place is a cozy bed where he can relax and feel safe.

Leo has a calm and gentle nature. He enjoys walking alongside other dogs and makes a wonderful companion on quiet strolls. At home, he would likely be happiest as the only dog, soaking up all the love and attention, while still enjoying occasional walks with canine friends.

This sweet boy also loves car rides and is always happy to join you on an adventure. When it is time to settle in, Leo is all about cuddles and being close to his person.

Leo is looking for a home where he can fully enjoy the indoor life he loves, with someone who appreciates a loyal and affectionate companion.

If you are ready to welcome a big, loving dog into your life, Leo is ready to meet you!

Clark

Meet Clark, our fearless 17-week-old daredevil!

If you’ve been following our adventures, you may have seen that Clark recently fractured his growth plate during one of his “extreme sports” moments. This brave little guy was rocking a cast until mid-March, but that didn't slow his sweet spirit one bit. And now the cast is finally off, hooray!

More than daring, Clark is an easygoing, affectionate guy who would love nothing more than to find the very best forever home. He’s expected to be ready for adoption soon, and we can’t wait to see him thriving with his new family.

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals.
We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.

We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.

We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.

Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
