Volunteer Spotlight

Thank you, Dan!

Dan Hughes has been an incredible part of our volunteer family for many years, dedicating his time and compassion in so many meaningful ways. A familiar and respected presence at PetSmart, Dan visits twice a week to care for our cats, ensuring they’re happy, healthy, and loved.

Dan has recently expanded his efforts by helping care for our cats in Jacksonville as well. And his commitment doesn’t stop there: Dan has opened his home to foster several cats, including Gabby, our amazing three legged wonder, and Momma with her adorable vegetable themed kittens from last summer.

He’s our resident cat whisperer when a scared or shy cat needs extra patience and understanding. Time and again, Dan earns their trust and makes them feel safe.

His kindness shines during the holidays, too: alongside fellow volunteers, he spent both Thanksgiving and Christmas Day making sure the animals in our care received the love and attention they deserve.

We are so grateful for Dan’s dedication, generosity, and heart for animals. Thank you, Dan, for everything you do!

Strengthening our legal team for humane cases

We’re pleased to share that ACHS has appointed a new attorney to help improve outcomes for our humane cases. We are now working with Jeff Holland and his team at Holland & Muirden, Attorneys At Law, who bring extensive experience in animal law and cruelty cases.

This partnership will strengthen our work with the legal community and help improve welfare outcomes for animals in Athens County.

Violet and her puppies

Violet came to us through a humane case and was very timid at first. Thanks to the care and patience of her foster, Chad Keller, she has truly blossomed.

Violet is now caring for her puppies, who are approximately 4 weeks old. The pups have been given names inspired by the Bridgerton books, adding a fun touch to this sweet family’s story.

We’ll share updates as they grow and prepare for their next chapters!

Sandy Cheeks

All the way from Bikini Bottom to your living room, Sandy Cheeks is on a mission to find her forever family and she’s bringing plenty of charm with her! With her irresistibly chunky cheeks and sweet, gentle nature, it’s easy to see how she got her name.

Sandy is the definition of easygoing. She takes life at her own relaxed pace, happy to lounge nearby, soak up affection, and keep you company without asking for much in return. Whether you’re having a quiet night in or a lazy weekend morning, she’ll be right there, adding a little extra warmth and love to your day.

Her calm demeanor makes her a wonderful fit for a variety of homes, and her affectionate personality means she bonds quickly with her people. Of course, those adorable cheeks are just the bonus, you’ll fall in love with her kind heart even faster.

If you’re looking for a laid-back, loving companion who traveled far and wide just to meet you, Sandy Cheeks is ready to settle in and make herself at home right in your heart.

Marshmallow

Soft, sweet, and full of personality, Marshmallow lives up to her name in the best way. This lovely girl came in with her many brothers (who have all since found their homes!), but she quickly made one thing clear: she’s not here to share the spotlight, she is the spotlight.

Marshmallow has a gentle, affectionate nature and absolutely adores her people. Whether she’s curling up beside you for a cozy nap or following you around like your fluffy little shadow, she thrives on human connection and will happily soak up all the love you’re willing to give. In return, she’ll reward you with endless sweetness and companionship.

While she can tolerate another calm housemate, Marshmallow would truly shine as the center of your world. She’s looking for a home where she can reign supreme.

If you’re searching for a loyal, loving companion who will fill your home with warmth, Marshmallow is ready to claim her throne in your heart.

Fabio

Fabio is a 3-year-old gentle and quiet boy with a very sweet nature. He may be a little shy at first and will need some time to feel comfortable in a new home, but once he warms up he becomes a loving and affectionate companion. He enjoys being near his people and shows his affection in calm and subtle ways.

Fabio would do best in a peaceful home where he can settle in at his own pace. He is not a fan of dogs, but he does enjoy the company of other cats and would likely do well with a feline friend.

With a little patience, Fabio will form a strong bond and make a loyal and comforting addition to the right home.

Leo

At just 3.5 years old, Leo the Mastiff is a beautiful mix of strength and sweetness. While he may look big and rugged at first glance, his true personality is all heart. After spending much of his life outdoors, Leo has made it clear that he much prefers the comforts of indoor living. His favorite place is a cozy bed where he can relax and feel safe.

Leo has a calm and gentle nature. He enjoys walking alongside other dogs and makes a wonderful companion on quiet strolls. At home, he would likely be happiest as the only dog, soaking up all the love and attention, while still enjoying occasional walks with canine friends.

This sweet boy also loves car rides and is always happy to join you on an adventure. When it is time to settle in, Leo is all about cuddles and being close to his person.

Leo is looking for a home where he can fully enjoy the indoor life he loves, with someone who appreciates a loyal and affectionate companion.

If you are ready to welcome a big, loving dog into your life, Leo is ready to meet you!

Clark

Meet Clark, our fearless 17-week-old daredevil!

If you’ve been following our adventures, you may have seen that Clark recently fractured his growth plate during one of his “extreme sports” moments. This brave little guy was rocking a cast until mid-March, but that didn't slow his sweet spirit one bit. And now the cast is finally off, hooray!

More than daring, Clark is an easygoing, affectionate guy who would love nothing more than to find the very best forever home. He’s expected to be ready for adoption soon, and we can’t wait to see him thriving with his new family.

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals.
We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.

We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.

We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.

Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
