What donated items do the Jacksonville kitties need? | |
Volunteer report from Tom Erlewine.
Volunteering at our Jacksonville facility is a chance to meet a whole lot of cats and kittens. While their catboxes get cleaned and food bowls are filled, the cats get much-needed playtime out of their cages. It’s a busy scene!
Last Friday was my first time volunteering there. Rachel Boyd showed me the ropes, and I was impressed to see how every cat is cared for. Rachel knows each of their names and personalities.

I saw that ACHS keeps all the supplies on hand that my own cats need at home, only lots more of it. With so many catboxes, you go through a lot of litter. And there lots of food and water bowls to keep filled.
Every cat has bedding thanks to stacks of old donated towels and blankets. There’s always another batch of laundry being run.
| | |
Shelves are kept filled with donated cat litter, food, cat carriers, and catboxes (plastic catboxes get lifted in and out of cages over and over, so they break down more often ones used at home).
Donated dollars are used to keep these supplies in stock, of course. But many supplies are donated directly. Passing along unused pet gear is a good way to help Athens County animals.
If you have something extra or unused, ACHS will put it right to
use helping the cats at the Jacksonville building or at foster homes throughout the county—the widespread ACHS Volunteer Network.

Oh my, Violet is sure to capture your heart. She fought Panluek and WON. She is 14 weeks old and purrs every chance she can get.
She and her siblings are full of kitten antics and Violet leads the pack, jumping onto high spaces and running around like the devil’s after her. She will meet you at the door, sleep with you if you let her (please let her) and follows you from room to room.
You can’t go wrong with Violet. She would love another kitten (maybe one of her siblings?) or a cat to play with and we think she would adjust to most any household with proper acclimation and introductions.

Beautiful Glen is an adventurous guy but also loves some cuddles. We discovered he is camera shy and may think it steals his soul. He’s got a great one so can’t blame him for being careful. Glen has done well with other cats and is about 1 year old.
Most cats will adjust to any household with proper acclimation and introductions.

Bennie is about 14 weeks old and is the brother to Violet and Jessie. They all survived PanLuek like champs but little Bennie does have a wobble now. It’s cute and it means he won’t jump up on your counters. Think of the names you could come up with – weebles wobble but they don’t fall down.
He loves to be held, purrs when you look at him and loves toys.

Coco is an 11-week-old sweetheart with a story that started high above the ground. She and her siblings were rescued from a tree on campus when they were only about 2 weeks old. From the very beginning, Coco proved to be an easy, lovable kitten, making life a breeze for her foster family.
This beautiful girl has grown into a playful, affectionate kitten who is ready to find a family of her own. Coco is litter box trained, well-mannered, and every bit the perfect little lady. She enjoys playtime, cuddles, and exploring the world around her with curiosity and confidence.
After getting such a strong start thanks to her rescuers and foster family, Coco is ready for the next chapter of her life: a forever home filled with love, comfort, and plenty of toys.

Cain is our longest resident, and more than anything we want to see him find a home of his own. He’s safe and loved in a foster home, but still waiting for the forever family he’s never had.
When Cain first came to us, it was clear he hadn’t known much kindness. He had spent much of his life chained outside, without the comfort every dog deserves.
Even then his loving, excited personality was waiting to shine. With time, care, and the support of his foster family, Cain has completely come into his own: he’s affectionate, eager, and full of life. He gets excited to see his people, leans in for attention, and has fully embraced the joys of indoor living (especially cozy blankets).
Cain would do best in a quiet home with no other animals, where he can truly relax and feel secure. He has so much love to give and has been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance.
He has waited longer than any dog should. It’s his turn.

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals. We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.
We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.
We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.
Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
