Volunteer needs this week

Thanks to all of you volunteers stepping up to support the work of the Athens County Humane Society. You are a force to be reckoned with! Our all-volunteer team of animal lovers is meeting the call on every level. Thanks, thanks, thanks!

How you can help

Jacksonville Clinic

We need volunteers at our Jacksonville Clinic facility to clean, check on the animals (and give them some petting!), and assist in their care. Here are the upcoming times we need to cover:

Friday July 24, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Saturday July 25, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Sunday July 26, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Friday July 31, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

You make the difference, and our animals feel the love.

Call (863) 414-2406 to help out.

Transportation

Donated items to Jacksonville. We’ve received some generous donations of items that include a cat tree, toys, and supplies. Right now, these are stored in Carol Waltz’s garage, and we need to move them to Jacksonville. Do you have a truck or van that could carry these items for us? The week of August 3 would be great, but we’re flexible. Please call Carol at (863) 414-2406. Thanks!

Doghouse to Jacksonville. Another donated item: a doghouse. It’s too big for Humane Agent Andy MacDonald to lift into a vehicle single-handedly, but one other person with a truck ought to do the trick. The same time frame as above. Please call Carol.

Why your volunteer hours are twice as important as you thought

Your volunteer time is very, very valuable to us. First, it’s simply how we get everything done. It’s the help that animals receive. It’s our mission.

But on top of that, your donation of time sends a clear message to those we ask for funds: it shows that we have deep community support, and the genuine resources to accomplish what we say we will.

This is why you sign in on a time sheet when helping at our Jacksonville clinic, for example. These sheets are records we need to generate financial support for animals in Athens County.

We say it often, but can’t say it too much: Thank You Volunteers!

Violet

Oh my, Violet is sure to capture your heart. She fought Panluek and WON. She is 14 weeks old and purrs every chance she can get.

She and her siblings are full of kitten antics and Violet leads the pack, jumping onto high spaces and running around like the devil’s after her. She will meet you at the door, sleep with you if you let her (please let her) and follows you from room to room.

You can’t go wrong with Violet. She would love another kitten (maybe one of her siblings?) or a cat to play with and we think she would adjust to most any household with proper acclimation and introductions.

Sammie

Mr. Universe! This handsome guy has so much charm and good looks to spare. Sammie came in from the streets and straight into our hearts. He has one stumbling block, he is Feline Leukemia positive. He would love to be an only cat to occupy your home and heart but could also live with another FeLV positive cat.

Sammie is about 2 years old.

Bennie

Bennie is about 14 weeks old and is the brother to Violet and Jessie. They all survived PanLuek like champs but little Bennie does have a wobble now. It’s cute and it means he won’t jump up on your counters. Think of the names you could come up with – weebles wobble but they don’t fall down.

He loves to be held, purrs when you look at him and loves toys.

Burton

Burton is a sweet little guy who was lovingly raised by his foster family and is now ready to find his forever home!

He was found as a tiny kitten, surviving on his own, until one of our volunteers scooped him up and gave him a second chance. Since then, Burton has grown into a happy, well-socialized kitten who gets along great with other cats, dogs, and older children.

If you're looking for a playful, affectionate companion, Burton may be the perfect addition to your family!

Coco

Coco is an 11-week-old sweetheart with a story that started high above the ground. She and her siblings were rescued from a tree on campus when they were only about 2 weeks old. From the very beginning, Coco proved to be an easy, lovable kitten, making life a breeze for her foster family.

This beautiful girl has grown into a playful, affectionate kitten who is ready to find a family of her own. Coco is litter box trained, well-mannered, and every bit the perfect little lady. She enjoys playtime, cuddles, and exploring the world around her with curiosity and confidence.

After getting such a strong start thanks to her rescuers and foster family, Coco is ready for the next chapter of her life: a forever home filled with love, comfort, and plenty of toys.

Fern

Fern is a sweet ~2 year old girl who is looking for a calm, low-key home to call her own. This gorgeous brown tabby would love to be the queen of the castle and would do best as the only cat in the home.

Fern enjoys the simple things in life, curling up in a comfy bed, lounging in a cat tree, and spending quiet time with her people. She would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a gentle and peaceful feline friend.

Cain

Cain

Cain is our longest resident, and more than anything we want to see him find a home of his own. He’s safe and loved in a foster home, but still waiting for the forever family he’s never had.

When Cain first came to us, it was clear he hadn’t known much kindness. He had spent much of his life chained outside, without the comfort every dog deserves.

Even then his loving, excited personality was waiting to shine. With time, care, and the support of his foster family, Cain has completely come into his own: he’s affectionate, eager, and full of life. He gets excited to see his people, leans in for attention, and has fully embraced the joys of indoor living (especially cozy blankets).

Cain would do best in a quiet home with no other animals, where he can truly relax and feel secure. He has so much love to give and has been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance.

He has waited longer than any dog should. It’s his turn.

Milo

Milo's toughest days are finally behind him.

When he came into our care, he was suffering from severe neglect. His right front paw was badly infected and beyond saving. After receiving lifesaving care, his leg had to be amputated, but today Milo is healthy, healed, and proving that three legs don't slow him down one bit.

At around 6 years old, Milo is a gentle, easygoing sweetheart. He loves a soft bed, enjoys being petted, is completely house-trained, and gets along well with other dogs. His favorite activities include naps, good meals, and soaking up affection.

Milo has overcome so much and asks for very little in return, just a safe, loving home.

Could you be the happy ending this sweet boy has been waiting for?

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals.
We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.

We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.

We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.

Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
