Catnip time!

Your cat’s five-minute fun break! They sniff it and get nutty, or eat it and get calm. After a few minutes, break’s over and it’s back to the hard work of bein’ a cat.

Have your kitties had some good catnip lately? ACHS sells quality organic catnip displayed in countertop jars at area businesses. It’s a fund-raiser and an awareness-raiser to remind folks of our work helping Athens County animals in need.

Sherry Norris manages our catnip program. Sherry is a long-time ACHS volunteer and former president of our board. She orders high quality organic catnip, bags it, distributes it to stores, and picks up the donated dollars left by animal lovers.

Thank you Sherry for single-handedly making this happen!

ACHS has an opening for a Humane Agent

Our current Humane Agent, Andy McDonald, is ready to retire soon. Andy has been great in this role for several years, and we’re eager to recruit his eventual replacement to work alongside him as long as possible before he steps away.

The Humane Agent is one of most important roles at the Athens County Humane Society—and one that many people never see firsthand.

The Humane Agent serves on the front lines: investigating reports of animal abuse and neglect, educating owners, working alongside veterinarians and law enforcement, and helping ensure animals get the protection they deserve. It’s challenging, meaningful work that requires compassion, professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm in difficult situations.

We’re currently recruiting for this position through the normal hiring channels, but we also wanted to reach out to the people who know our mission best: our volunteers and supporters.

Maybe you know someone who would make a great Humane Agent. Perhaps someone with experience in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, law enforcement, animal control, or another related field.

Someone with compassion, resilience, and a desire to serve animals and our community. Someone who makes you think, “They would be incredible in this role.” We’d love for you to encourage them to apply.

The position is full-time, paid ($20–$25 per hour), and includes specialized training through the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to become a commissioned Humane Agent.

If you or someone you know might be interested, please visit our job posting through the Ohio Animal Welfare Federation Career Center or email Mary Connolly at info@athenshumane.org. We’d be happy to talk about what the role involves and whether it might be a good fit.

Finding the right person is incredibly important—not only for the animals who need an advocate, but for the people of Athens County as well. Thank you for helping us spread the word.

Violet

Oh my, Violet is sure to capture your heart. She fought Panluek and WON. She is 14 weeks old and purrs every chance she can get.

She and her siblings are full of kitten antics and Violet leads the pack, jumping onto high spaces and running around like the devil’s after her. She will meet you at the door, sleep with you if you let her (please let her) and follows you from room to room.

You can’t go wrong with Violet. She would love another kitten (maybe one of her siblings?) or a cat to play with and we think she would adjust to most any household with proper acclimation and introductions.

Sammie

Mr. Universe! This handsome guy has so much charm and good looks to spare. Sammie came in from the streets and straight into our hearts. He has one stumbling block, he is Feline Leukemia positive. He would love to be an only cat to occupy your home and heart but could also live with another FeLV positive cat.

Sammie is about 2 years old.

Bennie

Bennie is about 14 weeks old and is the brother to Violet and Jessie. They all survived PanLuek like champs but little Bennie does have a wobble now. It’s cute and it means he won’t jump up on your counters. Think of the names you could come up with – weebles wobble but they don’t fall down.

He loves to be held, purrs when you look at him and loves toys.

Burton

Burton is a sweet little guy who was lovingly raised by his foster family and is now ready to find his forever home!

He was found as a tiny kitten, surviving on his own, until one of our volunteers scooped him up and gave him a second chance. Since then, Burton has grown into a happy, well-socialized kitten who gets along great with other cats, dogs, and older children.

If you're looking for a playful, affectionate companion, Burton may be the perfect addition to your family!

Coco

Coco is an 11-week-old sweetheart with a story that started high above the ground. She and her siblings were rescued from a tree on campus when they were only about 2 weeks old. From the very beginning, Coco proved to be an easy, lovable kitten, making life a breeze for her foster family.

This beautiful girl has grown into a playful, affectionate kitten who is ready to find a family of her own. Coco is litter box trained, well-mannered, and every bit the perfect little lady. She enjoys playtime, cuddles, and exploring the world around her with curiosity and confidence.

After getting such a strong start thanks to her rescuers and foster family, Coco is ready for the next chapter of her life: a forever home filled with love, comfort, and plenty of toys.

Fern

Fern is a sweet ~2 year old girl who is looking for a calm, low-key home to call her own. This gorgeous brown tabby would love to be the queen of the castle and would do best as the only cat in the home.

Fern enjoys the simple things in life, curling up in a comfy bed, lounging in a cat tree, and spending quiet time with her people. She would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a gentle and peaceful feline friend.

Cain

Cain

Cain is our longest resident, and more than anything we want to see him find a home of his own. He’s safe and loved in a foster home, but still waiting for the forever family he’s never had.

When Cain first came to us, it was clear he hadn’t known much kindness. He had spent much of his life chained outside, without the comfort every dog deserves.

Even then his loving, excited personality was waiting to shine. With time, care, and the support of his foster family, Cain has completely come into his own: he’s affectionate, eager, and full of life. He gets excited to see his people, leans in for attention, and has fully embraced the joys of indoor living (especially cozy blankets).

Cain would do best in a quiet home with no other animals, where he can truly relax and feel secure. He has so much love to give and has been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance.

He has waited longer than any dog should. It’s his turn.

Milo

Milo's toughest days are finally behind him.

When he came into our care, he was suffering from severe neglect. His right front paw was badly infected and beyond saving. After receiving lifesaving care, his leg had to be amputated, but today Milo is healthy, healed, and proving that three legs don't slow him down one bit.

At around 6 years old, Milo is a gentle, easygoing sweetheart. He loves a soft bed, enjoys being petted, is completely house-trained, and gets along well with other dogs. His favorite activities include naps, good meals, and soaking up affection.

Milo has overcome so much and asks for very little in return, just a safe, loving home.

Could you be the happy ending this sweet boy has been waiting for?
