How ACHS volunteering works

The Athens County Humane Society is volunteer-powered. We have a staff of only three employees: Executive Director Mary Connolly, her Assistant Rachel Boyd, and our Humane Agent Andy MacDonald handling animal abuse cases.

This tiny team gets things done—rescuing dogs, cats, farm animals, and more—with the help of us volunteers.

Athens County’s dog shelter is funded through the Sheriff’s Department, so residents have a place to take dogs. But no such shelter exists for cats and all the other animals helped by ACHS. How do we care for all these? Where do we house them? The ACHS Volunteer Network comes to the rescue.

What are volunteers asked to do?
Next to your name on our Volunteer List, we note the kind of activity you prefer. There’s a wide variety, ranging from planning events to simply lending a hand now and then.

How to volunteer

Use this web page to volunteer. It’s the place to give us your contact information and indicate which things you’d like to do. This puts you in touch with our Volunteer Coordinator, Carol Waltz. Carol’s a volunteer too, and a board member. She looks forward to hearing from you, and understands we’re all busy; volunteer time is hard to find and precious—even small amounts are super-valuable!

Update: Garden Tour Photo Contest

We received sixty-one entries in our first-ever Garden Tour Photo Contest. This contest is new and fun: while touring the gardens, folks use their smart phones to take pics and email them to us.

ACHS is partnering with the Athens Art Guild on this: the Guild is reviewing the photos and picking the winner this week. We’ll contact the winning photographer and they’ll receive their choice of $100 worth of cut flowers from Hyacinth Bean, or live plants from White’s Mill.

Watch our Facebook and Instagram pages for announcements of the finalists and the winner. We’ll share the winning photo here, too.

Milo's a sweetheart!

In last week’s Bulletin we told about Milo, the calm and happy

3-legged rescue (that’s him in the middle, above). But we got his age wrong: it turns out he’s only about 6 years old.

Milo’s getting along great, and now taking daily walks with his foster-friends Oscar and Sadie. He’s smart and obedient, spends lots of time napping, but is always up for it if there’s a chance of a walk.

His foster family is going to be traveling, and is looking for someone to take over fostering or adopting this sweet guy.

If you have ideas, please email “About Milo” to Tom Erlewine: tomerlewine@me.com. Thanks!

Coco

Coco is a 10-week-old sweetheart with a story that started high above the ground. She and her siblings were rescued from a tree on campus when they were only about 2 weeks old. From the very beginning, Coco proved to be an easy, lovable kitten, making life a breeze for her foster family.

This beautiful girl has grown into a playful, affectionate kitten who is ready to find a family of her own. Coco is litter box trained, well-mannered, and every bit the perfect little lady. She enjoys playtime, cuddles, and exploring the world around her with curiosity and confidence.

After getting such a strong start thanks to her rescuers and foster family, Coco is ready for the next chapter of her life: a forever home filled with love, comfort, and plenty of toys.

Cain

Cain

Cain is our longest resident, and more than anything we want to see him find a home of his own. He’s safe and loved in a foster home, but still waiting for the forever family he’s never had.

When Cain first came to us, it was clear he hadn’t known much kindness. He had spent much of his life chained outside, without the comfort every dog deserves.

Even then his loving, excited personality was waiting to shine. With time, care, and the support of his foster family, Cain has completely come into his own: he’s affectionate, eager, and full of life. He gets excited to see his people, leans in for attention, and has fully embraced the joys of indoor living (especially cozy blankets).

Cain would do best in a quiet home with no other animals, where he can truly relax and feel secure. He has so much love to give and has been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance.

He has waited longer than any dog should. It’s his turn.

Milo

Milo's toughest days are finally behind him.

When he came into our care, he was suffering from severe neglect. His right front paw was badly infected and beyond saving. After receiving lifesaving care, his leg had to be amputated, but today Milo is healthy, healed, and proving that three legs don't slow him down one bit.

At around 6 years old, Milo is a gentle, easygoing sweetheart. He loves a soft bed, enjoys being petted, is completely house-trained, and gets along well with other dogs. His favorite activities include naps, good meals, and soaking up affection.

Milo has overcome so much and asks for very little in return, just a safe, loving home.

Could you be the happy ending this sweet boy has been waiting for?

Fern

Fern is a sweet ~2 year old girl who is looking for a calm, low-key home to call her own. This gorgeous brown tabby would love to be the queen of the castle and would do best as the only cat in the home.

Fern enjoys the simple things in life, curling up in a comfy bed, lounging in a cat tree, and spending quiet time with her people. She would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a gentle and peaceful feline friend.

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals.
We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.

We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.

We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.

Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
