On June 4, Mary received a call from Heather Norman at the Athens County Dog Shelter about a tiny kitten whose back legs were not functioning properly. At the shelter, Heather and Tina Scott were caring for the little guy in the midst of one of their busiest days.
Mary transported the kitten, now known as Cheese Cube, to Athens Veterinary Clinic for evaluation. Thankfully, the examination showed no evidence of a major injury that could explain his condition. The team decided Cheese Cube needed time, patience, and a chance to heal.

Katie Murto welcomed Cheese Cube into foster care, and right away he set to work at getting better. Before long he made remarkable progress, putting one back foot in front of the other and growing stronger every day. He’s learned how to use a litter box on his own.
What began as a tiny kitten struggling to stand became a story of determination, teamwork, and hope. Cheese Cube continues to make strides!

The Athens County Humane Society’s 32nd Annual Garden Tour is next Sunday, June 28.
We have nine beautiful gardens to tour this year: four in Athens and five in Amesville and Millfield.

Coco is a 9-week-old sweetheart with a story that started high above the ground. She and her siblings were rescued from a tree on campus when they were only about 2 weeks old. From the very beginning, Coco proved to be an easy, lovable kitten, making life a breeze for her foster family.
This beautiful girl has grown into a playful, affectionate kitten who is ready to find a family of her own. Coco is litter box trained, well-mannered, and every bit the perfect little lady. She enjoys playtime, cuddles, and exploring the world around her with curiosity and confidence.
After getting such a strong start thanks to her rescuers and foster family, Coco is ready for the next chapter of her life: a forever home filled with love, comfort, and plenty of toys.

Despite her name, The Purr Monster is a sweet and gentle 1-year-old girl looking for a quiet home of her own. She spent much of her young life outdoors and came into our care after becoming pregnant as a stray. Still little more than a kitten herself, she wasn't quite sure how to be a mom, but she did her best.
The Purr Monster can be shy at first, but with patience and kindness, she begins to show her loving nature. She is looking for a family that will give her the time she needs to feel safe and secure.
After a difficult start to life, this deserving girl is ready to trade life on the streets for a warm bed, full belly, and a forever home.

Cain is our longest resident, and more than anything we want to see him find a home of his own. He’s safe and loved in a foster home, but still waiting for the forever family he’s never had.
When Cain first came to us, it was clear he hadn’t known much kindness. He had spent much of his life chained outside, without the comfort every dog deserves.
Even then his loving, excited personality was waiting to shine. With time, care, and the support of his foster family, Cain has completely come into his own: he’s affectionate, eager, and full of life. He gets excited to see his people, leans in for attention, and has fully embraced the joys of indoor living (especially cozy blankets).
Cain would do best in a quiet home with no other animals, where he can truly relax and feel secure. He has so much love to give and has been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance.
He has waited longer than any dog should. It’s his turn.

Fern is a sweet ~2 year old girl who is looking for a calm, low-key home to call her own. This gorgeous brown tabby would love to be the queen of the castle and would do best as the only cat in the home.
Fern enjoys the simple things in life, curling up in a comfy bed, lounging in a cat tree, and spending quiet time with her people. She would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a gentle and peaceful feline friend.

Evelyn is a remarkable girl with a story of strength, resilience, and love. After surviving panleukopenia and raising her babies, Etta, Pippa, Kate, and Hunter, later in life, Evelyn has more than earned her chance at the good life. Through everything she’s faced, she has remained a devoted mother and a true trooper.
Now that her kittens are growing up, it’s finally Evelyn’s turn to be cared for and spoiled the way she deserves. She is ready for a forever home where she can relax, feel safe, and enjoy all the comforts of indoor life. Whether she’s lounging in a sunny spot, enjoying affection from her people, or simply soaking in the peace and quiet, Evelyn is ready to leave her hard days behind her.
Evelyn’s journey is a testament to her incredible spirit, and she deserves a family who will cherish her for the wonderful cat she is. She is approximately six years old.
