A busy and inspiring weekend!

Hi volunteers and friends! This past weekend was a big one—highlighting the dedication of our volunteers, staff, and community supporters.

Friday: Bingo was amazing!

Friday evening we hosted a very successful Bingo Night at the Athens Community Center. So many people turned out that we had to expand our space to accommodate everyone.

Our ACHS Events Committee worked extra-hard to make this night so great. They really know how to throw a bingo party! This party took extra time to arrange because of new rules governing bingo games in Ohio —lots of dotting i’s and crossing t’s added to the process. Thank you volunteers! And thank you to our sponsors who made this fun community event possible!

Saturday: Proud of our clinic team!

Our spay/neuter clinics are vital to animal welfare in our community, preventing unwanted litters and supporting pets’ long term health. At last Saturday’s clinic we cared for 32 animals, with 31 successfully spayed or neutered.

What about that 32nd animal? During a day that otherwise went smoothly, we encountered a challenge with one of our own adoptable cats, Marshmallow. During surgery, Marshmallow began experiencing respiratory complications. Such rare emergencies do happen, and what followed next is a testament to volunteer teamwork.

Our medical team quickly identified the issue with Marshmallow and responded immediately. In that instant, every volunteer stepped up to ensure both the clinic and our patients were cared for. And Marshmallow’s doing well!

Char Rae, who was assisting with surgery, provided critical support to the medical staff during those intense moments. Rachel Boyd was called in to lend a hand. Rachel had been prepping another cat for surgery, so Fauna stepped in to monitor that cat. When Mary was needed to assist in the medical area, Chad Keller quickly took over out front — contacting and checking out clients who were waiting for their pets.

The medical team focused on Marshmallow as the rest of the team kept the clinic running smoothly for the animals and their families. Volunteers: thank you again for fantastic teamwork!

The work of our spay/neuter clinics goes far beyond population control. Each animal also receives vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, treatment for infections when needed.

Spaying and neutering also helps prevent serious health concerns later in life, including certain cancers and life threatening uterine infections.

Sunday: Jojo gets a family!

Lastly, we have wonderful adoption news. A local celebrity finally found her forever home. Sweet Jojo was adopted during our bi-monthly adoption event at Friendly Paws. You’ve probably petted Jojo when visiting the store. We couldn’t be happier to see this beloved girl finally find the happiness she deserves.

We are incredibly proud of the volunteers and staff who make this work possible. Their compassion, quick thinking, and commitment to animal welfare make a real difference in the lives of the animals we serve.

Thank you to everyone who supported ACHS this weekend, our volunteers, sponsors, staff, and community members. Your support allows us to continue providing critical care to animals throughout our county.

El

El is just over 4 months old and already stealing hearts everywhere she goes. El has been raised in a loving home environment, and it truly shows in her gentle, affectionate personality. She is already well on her way with training, about 70% potty trained and fully crate trained.

El has an amazing demeanor that makes her such a joy to be around. She does wonderful with other dogs and would thrive in a home where she can have companionship, play, and plenty of love. Whether she’s playing, exploring, or curling up for snuggles, she’s happiest just being near her people.

She would make an incredible family dog and is ready to find her forever home. Please share to help El find the loving family she deserves!

Clark

Meet Clark, our fearless 14-week-old daredevil!

If you’ve been following our adventures, you may have seen that Clark recently fractured his growth plate during one of his “extreme sports” moments. This brave little guy will be rocking a cast until the second week of March, but that hasn’t slowed his sweet spirit one bit!

More than daring, Clark is an easygoing, affectionate guy who would love nothing more than to find the very best forever home. He’s expected to be ready for adoption soon, and we can’t wait to see him thriving with his new family.

Sarah & Savannah

Savannah and Sarah are a bonded pair, who need to stay together. They’re 9 months old and very, very friendly. They’ll make wonderful lap cats but they’re fiercely independent: they’ll decide when it’s lap time and don’t want to be picked up! :) They are our longest-term kitty residents.

Cain

Cain is our longest-term doggy resident. He is a 3.5-year-old, strikingly handsome boy who has already endured more than his fair share. When he came into the care of the Athens County Humane So-ciety, he was in rough shape with wounds along his back and the scars of having spent most of his life on a chain. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the staff at the Athens County Dog Shelter and to his foster family, Cain has started to heal and learn what kindness feels like.

At his first vet visit, we also discovered that Cain is heartworm positive. While heartworm is a serious condition, Cain is receiving the treatment he needs. The process carries risks, but he has shown remarkable strength and resilience already.

After everything he’s overcome, Cain deserves the safety and love of a forever home. He would do best as the only pet, though he does enjoy side-by-side walks with other dogs. More than anything, Cain needs a home where he can finally experience the life every dog deserves, safe, cared for, and deeply loved.

Puppies

Good news! The nine puppies that came into our care on January 11 are now available for foster-to-adopt!

UPDATE: There is only one puppy left!! 🚨

Rob Thomas

Rob Thomas was once a misunderstood trap-neuter-return cat, but it didn’t take long for everyone to realize he was destined for more. This handsome guy is an absolute sweetheart, a true gentle giant: calm, affectionate, and full of love to give.

He enjoys the quieter things in life and would thrive in a home where he can soak up attention, lounge comfortably, and show off just how loving he really is. If you’re looking for a big-hearted companion who proves that second chances can lead to something wonderful, Rob Thomas might be your perfect match.

Rob is approximately 3 years old.

This Bulletin is put together by ACHS volunteers Kate Erlewine and Tom Erlewine, with information from Mary Connolly, ACHS Executive Director.

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals.
We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.

We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.

We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.

Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
