Last week brought the opportunity to make a meaningful impact for a local family and some very deserving puppies.
Andy McDonald and Mary Connolly have been working with a family experiencing an overpopulation of dogs. Some of their pets have been spayed and neutered and others are scheduled to be, but they had two litters of puppies needing placement. These pups are 8- and 12-weeks old.
Here’s Mary’s report:
First, helping the pups. The goal is to find safe, long-term homes for these puppies’ well-being. Next, helping the family. Goal #2 is helping the owners get low cost spay/neuter services to prevent future litters.
Searching for solutions, we connected with rescues across Ohio. One that stepped forward was Hickory Hounds Haven. They’re a team of veterinary professionals with a strong commitment to animal welfare, and they were eager to help.
Last Saturday, Katie Murto and I set out early to transport the puppies. We gave each one a much-needed bath and a quick snack before hitting the road. By 8 a.m., we were on our way to Hickory Hounds in Marengo, north of Columbus.
The trip was smooth other than one enthusiastic little singer who kept us company along the way.

The puppies were warmly welcomed by their foster, who gave them a thorough check and began planning next steps. They named the pups with a Breakfast Club theme: each one after a favorite breakfast food.
Happily we’re already received positive updates, and the puppies are settling in well. We’re excited to follow them as they grow and find their forever homes.

While we were in the area, we visited Groovy Plants Ranch, a truly unique and whimsical garden center. If you’re ever near there, it’s really worth a visit!
This effort was a true team collaboration, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone involved, from rescue partners to the foster team, for helping create a better outcome for both the puppies and their original family.

Chicken is a majestic 3-year-old feline who has absolutely no idea just how special he truly is. With his gentle nature and quiet charm, he may be a little shy at first, preferring to take his time getting comfortable. But with a bit of patience, he blossoms into an incredibly sweet and loyal companion.
Once Chicken warms up, he loves being near his people and offering calm, comforting company. Whether he is lounging nearby or soaking up gentle pets, he is a big, lovable chunk who is impossible not to adore.
We are already a little jealous of whoever gets to bring him home, because cats like Chicken do not come around every day. Maybe that someone is you?

Meet Clark, our fearless 15-week-old daredevil!
If you’ve been following our adventures, you may have seen that Clark recently fractured his growth plate during one of his “extreme sports” moments. This brave little guy was rocking a cast until mid-March, but that didn't slow his sweet spirit one bit. And now the cast is finally off, hooray!
More than daring, Clark is an easygoing, affectionate guy who would love nothing more than to find the very best forever home. He’s expected to be ready for adoption soon, and we can’t wait to see him thriving with his new family.

Savannah and Sarah are a bonded pair, who need to stay together. They’re 9 months old and very, very friendly. They’ll make wonderful lap cats but they’re fiercely independent: they’ll decide when it’s lap time and don’t want to be picked up! :) They are our longest-term kitty residents.

Cain is our longest-term doggy resident. He is a 3.5-year-old, strikingly handsome boy who has already endured more than his fair share. When he came into the care of the Athens County Humane So-ciety, he was in rough shape with wounds along his back and the scars of having spent most of his life on a chain. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the staff at the Athens County Dog Shelter and to his foster family, Cain has started to heal and learn what kindness feels like.
At his first vet visit, we also discovered that Cain is heartworm positive. While heartworm is a serious condition, Cain is receiving the treatment he needs. The process carries risks, but he has shown remarkable strength and resilience already.
After everything he’s overcome, Cain deserves the safety and love of a forever home. He would do best as the only pet, though he does enjoy side-by-side walks with other dogs. More than anything, Cain needs a home where he can finally experience the life every dog deserves, safe, cared for, and deeply loved.
| | Good news! The nine puppies that came into our care on January 11 are now available for foster-to-adopt! UPDATE: There is only one puppy left!! 🚨 | | |
Rob Thomas was once a misunderstood trap-neuter-return cat, but it didn’t take long for everyone to realize he was destined for more. This handsome guy is an absolute sweetheart, a true gentle giant: calm, affectionate, and full of love to give.
He enjoys the quieter things in life and would thrive in a home where he can soak up attention, lounge comfortably, and show off just how loving he really is. If you’re looking for a big-hearted companion who proves that second chances can lead to something wonderful, Rob Thomas might be your perfect match.
Rob is approximately 3 years old.

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals. We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.
We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.
We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.
Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
