New Animal Rehoming Request system

When people ask ACHS to take in an animal, our first step is routine questions: tell us about the animal and the situation. We keep this information handy in every animal’s record.

We now have a new way to collect and file this information: our online Animal Rehoming Request Form.

These requests used to come in through Facebook, email, phone calls, and word of mouth, making it easy for important details to get lost in the shuffle. This online form keeps track of every case, with all the information stored where we can find it.

The form records a date and time for each case. This helps us work through requests in the order they’re received. (We also take the urgency of each situation into consideration.)

If someone isn’t comfortable using the online form, no problem: we’re happy to connect with them and complete the form on their behalf.

Note to volunteers: If someone approaches you asking for help with an animal, direct them to the Animal Rehoming Request Form on our website. This puts their request in the right place so we can help.

Each animal’s case involves a lot of moving pieces. This new system keeps better records and is the fair way to decide who’s next in line. Thanks for helping us make this transition!”

It's been a busy week!

Saturday, Oct. 17 was our first Cat Video Fest at the Athena Cinema. It was a sellout show, and raised an incredible $1,893. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us and made this event a success!

Sunday, Oct. 18 we held an adoption event at Friendly Paws, and three of our kittens found their forever homes. Two more kittens were adopted from PetSmart, making it a great weekend for our little Adoptables!

Wedneday, Oct. 21 was another big day: the Rascal Unit visited and spayed/neutered 41 animals. These clinics make such a difference in our community as we work to reduce pet overpopulation.

In between events we handled calls and visits throughout the community, while every day our volunteers looked after the animals in our care.

We’re so grateful for our volunteers, community partners, adopters, fosters, and supporters makin all of this possible. There’s always a lot happening behind the scenes at the Athens County Humane Society as we’re working to help the animals who need us.

Haley's Humane Agent Training

This week, Haley Devinney will take part in Humane Agent Training through the Ohio Animal Welfare Federation as she prepares to take on her role investigating reports of animal cruelty and neglect in our community. Haley’s responsibilities will include responding to concerns, conducting investigations, documenting findings, and working with community members and law enforcement when needed.

The training covers Ohio animal cruelty laws, animal health and welfare, investigation techniques, evidence collection, report writing, ethics, and personal safety.

This is an important step in strengthening ACHS’s ability to advocate for animals experiencing cruelty or neglect and better serve our community.

Glen

Here's Glen! He's a great all-around guy who enjoys playtime and cuddletime! Glen is about 2 years old and is used to being around other cats, so he'd probably prefer another feline friend. He is currently sharing space with his fostermate, Gale, who's also available for adoption. He's adjusted well in his foster home. Glen is super affectionate and loves to lounge on his foster mom's lap. He's an easy-going cat and not demanding. That said, he has energy, and Glen is always up for chasing a laser or batting around a ping pong ball. He's a beautiful boy with the cutest pink ears!

He has good manners and always uses his litter box and scratching post. He's smaller than most male cats, doesn't mind being held, and likes a nice belly rub! What a charmer he is!

Tostada

Meet Tostada!

This sweet little guy has a special talent for making friends, even with the pickiest of cats! He came into our care with healing injuries, including a fractured pelvis and leg, but he hasn’t let that slow him down one bit.

Tostada is ready to find his forever home, preferably one with another friendly feline to be his buddy.

Think Tostada might be the perfect addition to your family? Apply to adopt at athenshumane.org/adopt.

Tucker

This happy, energetic boy is ready to find his forever home. Tucker gets along well with other dogs when properly introduced and has been making a wonderful recovery since coming into our care with severe mange and a secondary skin infection.

He’s looking and feeling better every day, and now he’s ready for the next chapter: finding his people!

Think Tucker might be your guy?

Benedict

Benedict and his brother Simon came to us as tiny babies this winter alongside their mom. Simon recently got adopted, so now Benedict is the last of their litter still waiting for a forever home!

Benedict is playful, loving, and full of puppy charm. He would make wonderful companion and is ready to find a family of his own.

Little Bit

Meet the ultimate golden girl, Little Bit!

This sweet senior has been through a lot at approximately 12 years old, including surgery for a cancerous mammary mass and a much-needed dental. She takes daily medication to slow the cancer’s progression and is currently feeling great. She does have persistent oronasal fistulas, which can make her prone to sneezing.

Little Bit is a happy, loving girl who enjoys car rides, gentle walks, naps, snuggles and the occasional zoomie! She does well with cats and dogs, but prefers calm, respectful companions and would do best without very young children.

She’s mostly housebroken but needs frequent potty breaks and a little patience when accidents happen.

This little ween has so much love to give and is ready for someone to spoil her!

Cain

Cain

Cain is our longest resident, and more than anything we want to see him find a home of his own. He’s safe and loved in a foster home, but still waiting for the forever family he’s never had.

When Cain first came to us, it was clear he hadn’t known much kindness. He had spent much of his life chained outside, without the comfort every dog deserves.

Even then his loving, excited personality was waiting to shine. With time, care, and the support of his foster family, Cain has completely come into his own: he’s affectionate, eager, and full of life. He gets excited to see his people, leans in for attention, and has fully embraced the joys of indoor living (especially cozy blankets).

Cain would do best in a quiet home with no other animals, where he can truly relax and feel secure. He has so much love to give and has been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance.

He has waited longer than any dog should. It’s his turn.

Bennie

Bennie is about 21 weeks old and is the brother to Violet and Jessie. They all survived PanLuek like champs but little Bennie does have a wobble now. It’s cute and it means he won’t jump up on your counters. Think of the names you could come up with – weebles wobble but they don’t fall down.

He loves to be held, purrs when you look at him and loves toys.

Gayle

Pretty girl Gayle has some really unique markings and adorable little white feet. She loves to explore and check everything out in her space. Gayle seems pretty chill and is about 1 year old.

Violet

Oh my, Violet is sure to capture your heart. She fought Panluek and WON. She is 21 weeks old and purrs every chance she can get.

She and her siblings are full of kitten antics and Violet leads the pack, jumping onto high spaces and running around like the devil’s after her. She will meet you at the door, sleep with you if you let her (please let her) and follows you from room to room.

You can’t go wrong with Violet. She would love another kitten (maybe one of her siblings?) or a cat to play with and we think she would adjust to most any household with proper acclimation and introductions.

Emma Gatewood

Little Miss Emma Gatewood is the sweetest kitten you will ever meet! She loves to be held, coddled, and pet, and will start up her purr engine the moment she sees you! She loves to play with her kitten roommates, but is always down to cuddle up for a nap.

Emma is thriving in foster care and can't wait to find her forever home!

The Athens County Humane Society isn’t part of, or funded by any national organization. We’re just local volunteers here to help animals.
We’ve been doing this work in Athens County since 1910.

We provide the county’s only response team for cases of animal abuse and neglect.

We care for abandoned animals, paying their vet bills, finding them shelter in foster homes, and adopting them into forever homes.

Your support for ACHS gives immediate aid to suffering animals in Ath-ens County. We need your help!
