The Cat Test: Lou meets Sylvia and The Gang

Sometimes Friends of the Shelter Dogs asks us to cat-test one of their dogs. This usually means there’s a wonderful adopter who needs to know: will this dog be safe around their cat?

Luckily, we have just the place for that! Our clinic in Jacksonville gives shelter dogs a chance to meet some very experienced feline evaluators.

These photos are of recently adopted Lou, who came in for a cat test and behaved like an absolute gentleman. With his knowledgeable handler, Melanie Yoder of BARC (Behavior Analysis Reform for Companions), Lou safely navigated the kitten obstacles and handled the whole experience beautifully.

He even managed to survive the ultimate boss: Sylvia, pictured here looking on at her visitor with what can only be described as complete disgust.

We’re always happy to help our shelter friends give potential adopters a little more information before making that perfect match.

Benedict

Benedict and his brother Simon came to us as tiny babies this winter alongside their mom. Simon recently got adopted, so now Benedict is the last of their litter still waiting for a forever home!

Benedict is playful, loving, and full of puppy charm. He would make wonderful companion and is ready to find a family of his own.

Al

Al is a super social, easygoing 13-week-old guy who seems to believe that everyone is a potential friend. He loves playing with other cats and would do best in a home with another playful, social cat who can keep him company and join in on the fun.

When it comes to dogs, Al approaches things with a little cautious optimism. He’s curious and willing to give them a chance, especially when introductions are thoughtful and gradual.

Al had a rough start to life, but luckily, he didn’t have to navigate it for long. He was quickly scooped up by some amazing fosters who gave him the safety, care, and time he needed to flourish. And flourish he has!

Today, Al is a happy, playful, social guy who is ready for a forever home where he can keep being his wonderful self. If you already have a playful feline looking for a buddy, Al might be just the friend they’ve been waiting for.

Bennie

Bennie is about 18 weeks old and is the brother to Violet and Jessie. They all survived PanLuek like champs but little Bennie does have a wobble now. It’s cute and it means he won’t jump up on your counters. Think of the names you could come up with – weebles wobble but they don’t fall down.

He loves to be held, purrs when you look at him and loves toys.

Gayle

Pretty girl Gayle has some really unique markings and adorable little white feet. She loves to explore and check everything out in her space. Gayle seems pretty chill and is about 1 year old.

Cain

Cain

Cain is our longest resident, and more than anything we want to see him find a home of his own. He’s safe and loved in a foster home, but still waiting for the forever family he’s never had.

When Cain first came to us, it was clear he hadn’t known much kindness. He had spent much of his life chained outside, without the comfort every dog deserves.

Even then his loving, excited personality was waiting to shine. With time, care, and the support of his foster family, Cain has completely come into his own: he’s affectionate, eager, and full of life. He gets excited to see his people, leans in for attention, and has fully embraced the joys of indoor living (especially cozy blankets).

Cain would do best in a quiet home with no other animals, where he can truly relax and feel secure. He has so much love to give and has been waiting far too long for someone to give him a chance.

He has waited longer than any dog should. It’s his turn.

Violet

Oh my, Violet is sure to capture your heart. She fought Panluek and WON. She is 18 weeks old and purrs every chance she can get.

She and her siblings are full of kitten antics and Violet leads the pack, jumping onto high spaces and running around like the devil’s after her. She will meet you at the door, sleep with you if you let her (please let her) and follows you from room to room.

You can’t go wrong with Violet. She would love another kitten (maybe one of her siblings?) or a cat to play with and we think she would adjust to most any household with proper acclimation and introductions.
