  CH 17 "FORGIVENESS AND HEALING"
VI. THE HEALED RELATIONSHIP

50 Accept with gladness what you do not understand, and let it be explained to you as you perceive its purpose work in it to make it holy. You will find many opportunities to blame each other for the "failure" of your relationship, for it will seem at times to have no purpose. A sense of aimlessness will come to haunt you and to remind you of all the ways you once sought for satisfaction and thought you found it. Forget not now the misery you really found, and do not now breathe life into your failing egos. For your relationship has not been disrupted. It has been saved.

Our next few lessons make a special point
of firming up your willingness to make
your weak commitment strong, your scattered goals
blend into one intent. You are not asked
for total dedication all the time,
as yet. But you are asked to practice now
in order to attain the sense of peace
such unified commitment will bestow,
if only intermittently. It is
experiencing this which makes it sure
that you will give your total willingness
to following the way the course sets forth.

Our lessons now are geared specifically
to widening horizons and direct
approaches to the special blocks which keep
your vision narrow and too limited
to let you see the value of our goal.
We are attempting now to lift these blocks,
however briefly. Words alone can not
convey the sense of liberation which
their lifting brings. But the experience
of freedom and of peace that comes as you
give up your tight control of what you see
speaks for itself. Your motivation will
be so intensified that words become
of little consequence. You will be sure
of what you want and what is valueless.

And so we start our journey beyond words
by concentrating first on what impedes
our progress still. Experience of what
exists beyond defensiveness remains
beyond achievement while it is denied.
It may be there, but you cannot accept
its presence. So we now attempt to go
past all defenses for a little while
each day. No more than this is asked because
no more than this is needed. It will be
enough to guarantee the rest will come.

WHAT IS IAMBIC PENTAMETER?
*IAMBIC PENTAMETER

There is a light in you the world can not
perceive. And with its eyes you will not see
this light, for you are blinded by the world.
Yet you have eyes to see it. It is there
for you to look upon. It was not placed
in you to be kept hidden from your sight.
This light is the reflection of the thought
we practice now. To feel the love of God
within you is to see the world in light,
shining in innocence, alive with hope,
and blessed with perfect charity and love.

Who could feel fear in such a world as this?
It welcomes you, rejoices that you came,
and sings your praises as it keeps you safe
from every form of danger and of pain.
It offers you a warm and gentle home
in which to stay a while. It blesses you
throughout the day, and watches through the night
as silent guardian of your holy sleep.
It sees salvation in you, and protects
the light in you in which it sees its own.
It offers you its flowers and its snow
   in thankfulness for your benevolence.

This is the world the love of God reveals.
It is so different from the world you see
through darkened eyes of malice and of fear,
that one belies the other. Only one
can be perceived at all. The other one
is wholly meaningless. A world in which
forgiveness shines on everything and peace
offers its gentle light to everyone
is inconceivable to those who see
a world of hatred rising from attack,
poised to avenge, to murder and destroy.

Yet is the world of hatred equally
   unseen and inconceivable to those
who feel God's love in them. Their world reflects
   the quietness and peace that shines in them;
the gentleness and innocence they see
surrounding them; the joy with which they look
out from the endless wells of joy within.
What they have felt in them they look upon,
and see Its sure reflection everywhere.

What would you see? The choice is given you.
But learn and do not let your mind forget
this law of seeing: You will look upon
that which you feel within. If hatred finds
a place within your heart you will perceive
a fearful world, held cruelly in death's
sharp-pointed, bony fingers. If you feel
the love of God within you, you look out
upon a world of mercy and of love.

Today we pass illusions as we seek
to reach to what is true in us, and feel
   Its all-embracing tenderness, Its Love
Which knows us perfect as Itself, Its sight
which is the gift Its Love bestows on us.
We learn the way today. It is as sure
as Love Itself, to Which it carries us.
For its simplicity avoids the snares
the foolish convolutions of the world's
apparent reasoning but serve to hide.

Simply do this: be still and lay aside
   all thoughts of what you are and what God is;
   all concepts you have learned about the world;
all images you hold about yourself.
Empty your mind of everything it thinks
   is either true or false or good or bad;
of every thought it judges worthy and
all the ideas of which it is ashamed.
Hold on to nothing. Do not bring with you
one thought the past has taught, nor one belief
you ever learned before from anything.
Forget this world, forget this course, and come
with wholly empty hands unto your God.

Is it not He Who knows the way to you?
You need not know the way to Him. Your part
is simply to allow all obstacles
that you have interposed between the Son
and God the Father to be quietly
removed forever. God will do His part
   in joyful and immediate response.
Ask and receive. But do not make demands,
nor point the road to God by which He should
appear to you. The way to reach Him is
merely to let Him be. For in that way
is your reality acclaimed as well.

And so today we do not choose the way
in which we go to Him. But we do choose
to let Him come. And with this choice we rest.
And in our quiet hearts and open minds
His Love will blaze Its pathway of Itself.
What has not been denied is surely there
if it be true, and can be surely reached.
God knows His Son, and knows the way to him.
He does not need His Son to show Him how
to find His way. Through every opened door
His Love shines outward from Its home within,
and lightens up the world in innocence.

" Father, we do not know the way to You.
But we have called and You will answer us.
We will not interfere. Salvation's ways
are not our own for they belong to You.
And it is unto You we look for them.
Our hands are open to receive Your gifts.
We have no thoughts we think apart from You,
and cherish no beliefs of what we are
or Who created us. Yours is the way
that we would find and follow. And we ask
but that Your Will, Which is our own as well,
be done in us and in the world, that it
becomes a part of Heaven now. Amen."

ACIM Edmonton - Sarah's Reflections
ACIM Edmonton, CA
LESSON 189
I feel the Love of God within me now.

Sarah's Commentary:

This is another beautiful Lesson that is so similar to what we focused on in the Lesson yesterday. It is all about the light in our right minds that we cannot access when the darkness of the ego thought system prevails. Yet we do have access to this light when we choose the thought system being taught by Jesus through this Course. He tells us precisely what we are to do, which is to let go of all that stands in the way. Forgiveness is about releasing the thought system that reflects our decision to listen and follow the false self. It is a choice we made to separate from the love given us in our creation. If this is the case and the love is in us now, why do we not experience consistent peace and joy? It is only because we are blocking it from our awareness. We have identified with the separate, individual, and special self that we think we are. We think we are on our own and have to figure out this life and successfully solve the problems that show up in form so we can be happy; but, it is all a smokescreen set up by the ego to keep us distracted, rather than looking within. It is like trying to participate with the characters in a movie by thinking we can solve the problems of the characters on the screen. There is nothing we can do in form that will ever bring us the love we seek because we already have it. We must go within to connect with the place in us where the light dwells.

It is in the experience of the holy instant, where in that instant we connect deeply with peace, love, innocence, joy, gentleness, quietness, and hope in a moment of blissful silence, that all of our thoughts, hopes, expectations, and concerns are stilled for just a moment. This light is in us now, and it is intended to be known. "It was not placed in you to be kept hidden from your sight." (W.189.1.5) In the Text, Jesus reminds us, "There is a light that this world cannot give. Yet you can give it, as it was given you. And as you give it, it shines forth to call you from the world and follow it. For this light will attract you as nothing in this world can do. And you will lay aside the world and find another." (T.13.VI.11.1-5) (ACIM OE T.12.VI.55)

What is it that keeps us from experiencing this light that is in us all the time? Jesus says that we are "blinded by the world," (W.189.1.2) But "To feel the Love of God within you is to see the world anew, shining in innocence, alive with hope." (W.189.1.7) This is the real world, but it is not external. This world reflects the love in our minds. In this experience, whatever happens is no longer of concern to us because there is an awareness that we are not the dream figures in this dream but, in fact, we are the dreamer of the dream. How can what happens in the dream affect you when you know that you are the one dreaming it? From outside of the dream, nothing here is real nor has any real consequence. When we see ourselves as figures in the dream, we feel vulnerable, and as a result, we set up defenses to protect ourselves. Our awakening from the dream is preceded by a change of perception from wrong-minded to right-minded perception and with it comes the experience of the real world.

"Who could feel fear in such a world as this? It welcomes you, rejoices that you came, and sings your praises as it keeps you safe from every form of danger and of pain. It offers you a warm and gentle home in which to stay a while." (W.189.2.1-3) The real world is a state of healed perception that precedes Heaven. "This is the world the Love of God reveals." (W.189.3.1) It is not the world we experience when we identify with the ego and see ourselves as a figure in the dream that is being acted on. The world becomes meaningless when seen from the perspective of the dreamer of this dream. From the perspective of the ego mind, the world is full of hatred and attack of every kind. Yet it is only the hatred and attack in the mind that is so intolerable to us that we project it out, and now we see it in the world.

The world we see is an outward expression of our inner condition. "Perception makes projection." (T.21.IN.1.1) (ACIM OE T.21.I.1) The world we see is a projection of our own thoughts. It is a giant projector screen where we see what is in our own minds. "You will look upon that which you feel within." (W.189.5.3) Everyone on the projector screen offers us another opportunity to look within and see what wounds we are holding onto that are projected outward. It takes great honesty and courage to look at these wounds, without judgment and without defending against them. Our suffering is nothing but our resistance to taking responsibility for our projections. When we say "yes" to whatever we are experiencing and see everything as helpful for our healing, there is no need for suffering. Allow yourself to experience fully what is coming up because, without resistance, the feelings and emotions that have been kept suppressed can be brought to the light, and they will dissipate. Now the blocks to love are released.

I am not saying there are not events in the world that reflect behaviors that are hateful and attacking. These behaviors are facts. Yet our interpretation of these facts is what upsets us. For example: someone may take your money. That is a fact. They have the money you had and now you don't have it, but only your interpretation that you have been hurt and the thief deserves to be punished causes you pain. As Jesus tells us, "Perhaps it will be helpful to remember that no one can be angry at a fact." (Manual for Teachers.17.4.1) When we interpret the act of taking money by someone who is a thief, we are accusing ourselves of thievery, but what have we stolen? We believe the ego's story that we have stolen our identity from God, but we don't want to see this in ourselves. We prefer to see the thief as outside of ourselves.

However, we are being shown there is nothing outside of us. Everything starts in our own minds. When we are not willing to look within but instead see the problem outside ourselves, we are helpless to do anything about it. We are reacting to our interpretations as if they were correct. "This is shown by the fact that you react to your interpretations as if they were correct." (T.12.I.2.3) (ACIM OE T.11.I.2) Now we defend those interpretations, and we suffer as a result. "Under the circumstances, would it not be more desirable to have been wrong, even apart from the fact that you were wrong?" (T.13.IV.3.1) (ACIM OE T.12.IV.25) When we recognize that "Perception is a mirror, not a fact," (W.304.1.3) we become more willing to investigate what is being mirrored that is unhealed within the mind. The temptation is always to blame instead of to look within. Only by looking within can we heal our own misperceptions.

I had a discussion with someone last night about the ills of the world and all of the crises going on with everything seemingly getting worse. Many people are being challenged by the economic
conditions. The world we see seems full of problems, and no matter how hard we try, they continue generation after generation. Yet that is precisely why the world was made. It was made to distract us by placing our focus on the screen where all these activities seem to be taking place. This is why the Lesson says that we are "blinded by the world." (W.189.1.2) "Yet you have eyes to see it." (W.189.1.3) The truth will not be seen through our body's eyes, but when we identify with the right minded perception, we will see with vision. Vision has nothing to do with the body's eyes that were made not to see. Their seeing stops at the forms of the world. Behind these images, lies the real world.

We cannot see both worlds. It is either a world of malice or the real world. The pictures are mutually exclusive. "Yet is the world of hatred equally unseen and inconceivable to those who feel God's Love in them." (W.189.4.1) Yes, we will still see the misbehaviors in the world, but we do not need to see them as anything real, and they do not have to disturb our peace. "What would you see? The choice is given you. But learn and do not let your mind forget this law of seeing: You will look upon that which you feel within. If hatred finds a place within your heart, you will perceive a fearful world, held cruelly in death's sharp-pointed, bony fingers. If you feel the Love of God within you, you will look out on a world of mercy and of love." (W.189.5.1-5)

The real world is only experienced when we forgive everyone. This means there can be no exceptions made. No one can be excluded from our forgiveness. We must make a total commitment to this journey within the mind. It takes a lot of disciplined work, but it is a wonderful use of time. Jesus reminds us that to delay the healing of our minds is tragic. He is not trying to coerce us but only remind us on behalf of our own happiness, since he knows how we suffer when we follow the dictates of the ego. We cannot do this alone; we need the power of the Holy Spirit, Who is always available to us when we call on Him. He is in our right minds. He is the light that is always there to shine away the darkness of our egoic thoughts.

Ask yourself today, "What do I have to give over to the Holy Spirit for healing in order to feel the love of God within me now? How much desire and willingness do I have to stay vigilant to the workings of my mind?" It means looking at the reactions that we have to everything that seems to be happening. We can no longer cherish our grievances, our self-concepts, all the images we hold about ourselves, all our beliefs about what is good or bad, and all our judgments about what we like or do not like. Imagine the honesty and courage that goes into this kind of self-revelation. This is why it is so important to be watchful of our thoughts, observing them without judgment and allowing the Holy Spirit to be the Guide, rather than listening to the voice of the ego. With willingness and desire for healing and honesty in looking at our thoughts, the Love of God that is always within us will shine forth. We become a channel of His love and His peace.

Look at the ways you define yourself as a man/woman, father/mother, employee, Course student, good cook, talented singer, or whatever else. Now, look at the rules you have for your relationships and the expectations you have of the people in your life. When these expectations are not met, we have grievances. As Jesus explains, it is because we see ourselves as different from the other, rather than the same. I am me and you are not. Further, we see our needs as more important. You are the means to my end. Thus, I am always the important one in any relationship, and you are there to attend to my needs. All the rules of behavior, all the roles, all the expectations, and all my concepts of what I need to be happy create the dance of specialness. That is why we must look at it all and raise everything to awareness. Otherwise, we simply operate on automatic pilot, reacting as we always have. Instead, Jesus asks us to "Simply do this: Be still and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself." (W.189.7.1) He is telling us to hold onto nothing we think and believe. He tells us that we have been wrong about everything. He wants us to remember that the problem and the solution are not in changing anything in the world of form, but only in our own minds. He is asking us not to determine how any problem is to be solved, as it can never be solved where it is not, which is in the outer forms of this world.

"Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. Forget this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God." (W.189.7.4-5) He is not proposing that we put the Course down and do no more Lessons and no more study. We have more to do at this stage. However, it is ultimately about letting everything go, including this Course, as a prerequisite to entering this state of Oneness with God in our meditation time. To know the Course is not enough. Ultimately, it is about the experience that comes when we are willing to apply this teaching. It is about letting go of the past and the future. Jesus wants us to forget what we have taught ourselves because we have been badly taught. We must let go of everything we have learned and allow ourselves to open up to being taught. "Let us be still an instant, and forget all things we ever learned, all thoughts we had, and every preconception that we hold of what things mean and what their purpose is. Let us remember not our own ideas of what the world is for. We do not know. Let every image held by everyone be loosened from our minds and swept away." (T.31.I.12.1-3) (ACIM OE T.31.I.12) It certainly does require surrendering our way, which requires great humility. Just notice how much reluctance shows up in this process---how much we want to hold onto our own answers, our point of view, our perspectives, and ultimately our control over our own lives.

We block the experience of the holy instant by thinking that we can figure it all out instead of releasing everything we think we know. "You need not know the way to Him. Your part is simply to allow all obstacles that you have interposed between the Son and God the Father to be quietly removed forever." (W.189.8.2-3) This is the arrogance of the ego, where we think we can know the way, and where we defend our beliefs and strategies instead of just emptying our minds and asking to receive. We do not need to point out the way nor make demands. "Ask and receive. But do not make demands, nor point the road to God by which He should appear to you." (W.189.8.5-6) Isn't this what we do when we ask God for the answer to a specific problem that we seem to be facing? We are telling Him that we know what the problem is and that we have determined the answer that we want from Him, but it is not up to us to choose the way.

Our part is to set aside what we think we know, and let Him come. It is a decision we must make to surrender our way. We just need to "step back and let Him lead the way." (W.155) We just need to "Rest in God," (W.109) and as we turn over all our self-attack and self-hatred (which we generally defend against) for healing, the Holy Spirit then offers us the miracle. He knows the way; so let us lay down our belief that we will find the way on our own. Let go of interfering thoughts, concepts, values, beliefs, and expectations. All we have to do is open the door, be willing to call out to Him for help, and then be willing to watch our thoughts and leave the rest to Him. The mistake we make is to put ourselves in charge of our healing instead of letting the Holy Spirit do the healing for us. We cannot heal ourselves. We need Someone from outside of the matrix to do the healing for us. Our part is to bring the blocks to the inner altar and place them there.

"Father, we do not know the way to You. But we have called, and You have answered us. We will not interfere. Salvation's ways are not our own, for they belong to You. And it is unto You we look for them. Our hands are open to receive Your gifts. We have no thoughts we think apart from You, and cherish no beliefs of what we are, or Who created us. Yours is the way that we would find and follow. And we ask but that Your Will, which is our own as well, be done in us and in the world, that it become a part of Heaven now ." Amen . (W.189.10.1-10)

If we pray with true desire to know the truth about the Self we are, we must start by admitting that we do not know. We have to admit that we are lost, and that we cannot figure out our own way. We release the "I know" mind and simply allow everything to come up for healing. Just because it is all illusion doesn't mean we can simply glide past it. Having the courage to look at the concepts, beliefs, and demands we make of others, and the wounds we are holding onto, is easier when we open up and allow the light of Truth to come forth.

This is such a favorite Lesson of mine because it is ultimately the whole Course summed up in terms of what we are to do every day to have the experience of the holy instant and to truly feel the Love of God.

VI. The Healed Relationship

43
The holy relationship is the expression of the holy instant in living in this world. Like everything about salvation, the holy instant is a practical device, witnessed to by its results. The holy instant never fails. The experience of it is always felt. Yet without expression, it is not remembered. The holy relationship is a constant reminder of the experience in which the relationship became what it is. And as the unholy relationship is a continuing hymn of hate in praise of its maker, so is the holy relationship a happy song of praise to the Redeemer of relationships.

44 The holy relationship, a major step toward the perception of the real world, is learned. It is the old unholy relationship transformed and seen anew. The holy relationship is a phenomenal teaching accomplishment. In all its aspects, as it begins, develops, and becomes accomplished, it represents the reversal of the unholy relationship. Be comforted in this-the only difficult phase is the beginning. For here, the goal of the relationship is abruptly shifted to the exact opposite of what it was. This is the first result of offering the relationship to the Holy Spirit to use for His purposes.

45 This invitation is accepted immediately, and the Holy Spirit wastes no time in introducing the practical results of asking Him to enter. At once His goal replaces yours. This is accomplished very rapidly, but it makes the relationship seem disturbed, disjunctive, and even quite distressing. The reason is quite clear. For the relationship as it is is out of line with its own goal, and clearly unsuited to the purpose which has been accepted for it. In its unholy condition, your goal was all that seemed to give it meaning. Now it seems to make no sense. Many relationships have been broken off at this point, and the pursuit of the old goal reestablished in another relationship. For once the unholy relationship has accepted the goal of holiness, it can never again be what it was.

46 The temptation of the ego becomes extremely intense with this shift in goals. For the relationship has not as yet been changed sufficiently to make its former goal completely without attraction, and its structure is "threatened" by the recognition of its inappropriateness for meeting its new purpose. The conflict between the goal and the structure of the relationship is so apparent that they cannot coexist. Yet now the goal will not be changed. Set firmly in the unholy relationship, there is no course except to change the relationship to fit the goal. Until this happy solution is seen and accepted as the only way out of the conflict, the relationship seems to be severely strained.

47 It would not be kinder to shift the goal more slowly, for the contrast would be obscured and the ego given time to reinterpret each slow step according to its liking. Only a radical shift in purpose could induce a complete change of mind about what the whole relationship is for. As this change develops and is finally accomplished, it grows increasingly beneficent and joyous. But at the beginning, the situation is experienced as very precarious. A relationship undertaken by two individuals for their unholy purposes suddenly has holiness for its goal. As these two contemplate their relationship from the point of view of this new purpose, they are inevitably appalled. Their perception of the relationship may even become quite disorganized. And yet, the former organization of their perception no longer serves the purpose they have agreed to meet.

48 This is the time for faith. You let this goal be set for you. That was an act of faith. Do not abandon faith, now that the rewards of faith are being introduced. If you believed the Holy Spirit was there to accept the relationship, why would you now not still believe that He is there to purify what He has taken under His guidance? Have faith in each other in what but seems to be a trying time. The goal is set. And your relationship has sanity as its purpose. For now you find yourselves in an insane relationship, recognized as such in the light of its goal.

49 Now the ego counsels thus---substitute for this another relationship to which your former goal was quite appropriate. You can escape from your distress only by getting rid of each other. You need not part entirely if you choose not to do so. But you must exclude major areas of fantasy from each other to save your sanity. Hear not this now! Have faith in Him Who answered you. He heard. Has He not been very explicit in His answer? You are not now wholly insane. Can you deny that He has given you a most explicit statement? Now He asks for faith a little longer, even in bewilderment. For this will go, and you will see the justification for your faith emerge to bring you shining conviction. Abandon Him not now, nor each other. This relationship has been reborn as holy.

51 You are very new in the ways of salvation and think you have lost your way. Your way is lost, but think not this is loss. In your newness, remember that you have started again together. And take each other's hand to walk together along a road far more familiar than you now believe. Is it not certain that you will remember a goal unchanged throughout eternity? For you have chosen but the goal of God from which your true intent was never absent.

52 Throughout the Sonship is the song of freedom heard in joyous echo of your choice. You have joined with many in the holy instant, and they have joined with you. Think not your choice will leave you comfortless, for God Himself has blessed your holy relationship. Join in His blessing, and withhold not yours upon it. For all it needs now is your blessing that you may see that in it rests salvation. Condemn salvation not, for it has come to you. And welcome it together, for it has come to join you together in a relationship in which all the Sonship is together blessed.

53 You undertook together to invite the Holy Spirit into your relationship. He could not have entered otherwise. Although you may have made many mistakes since then, you have also made enormous efforts to help Him do His work. And He has not been lacking in appreciation for all you have done for Him. Nor does He see the mistakes at all. Have you been similarly grateful to each other? Have you consistently appreciated the good efforts and overlooked mistakes? Or has your appreciation flickered and grown dim in what seemed to be the light of the mistakes? You are now entering upon a campaign to blame each other for the discomfort of the situation in which you find yourselves. And by this lack of thanks and gratitude, you make yourselves unable to express the holy instant, and thus you lose sight of it.

54 The experience of an instant, however compelling it may be, is easily forgotten if you allow time to close over it. It must be kept shining and gracious in your awareness of time but not concealed within it. The instant remains. But where are you? To give thanks to each other is to appreciate the holy instant and thus enable its results to be accepted and shared. To attack each other is not to lose the instant but to make it powerless in its effects. You have received the holy instant, but you have established a condition in which you cannot use it. As a result, you do not realize that it is with you still. And by cutting yourself off from its expression, you have denied yourself its benefit. You reinforce this every time you attack each other, for the attack must blind you to yourself. And it is impossible to deny yourself and recognize what has been given and received by you.

55 You stand together in the holy presence of truth itself. Here is the goal, together with you. Think you not the goal itself will gladly arrange the means for its accomplishment? It is just this same discrepancy between the purpose that has been accepted and the means as they stand now which seems to make you suffer, but which makes Heaven glad. If Heaven were outside you, you could not share in its gladness. Yet because it is within, the gladness, too, is yours. You are joined in purpose, but remain still separate and divided on the means.

56 Yet the goal is fixed, firm, and unalterable, and the means will surely fall in place because the goal is sure. And you will share the gladness of the Sonship that it is so. As you begin to recognize and accept the gifts you have so freely given to each other, you will also accept the effects of the holy instant and use them to correct all your mistakes and free you from their results. And learning this, you will have also learned how to release all the Sonship and offer it in gladness and thanksgiving to Him Who gave you your release, and Who would extend it through you.
