11 The real world is attained simply by the complete forgiveness of the old, the world you see without forgiveness. The Great Transformer of perception will undertake with you the careful searching of the mind that made this world and uncover to you the seeming reasons for your making it. In the light of the real reason which He brings, as you follow Him, He will show you that there is no reason here at all. Each spot His reason touches grows alive with beauty, and what seemed ugly in the darkness of your lack of reason is suddenly released to loveliness. Not even what the Son of God made in insanity could be without a hidden spark of beauty which gentleness could release.

Lesson 189
I feel the Love of God
within me now.

1 There is a light in you the world can not perceive. And with its eyes you will not see this light, for you are blinded by the world. Yet you have eyes to see it. It is there for you to look upon. It was not placed in you to be kept hidden from your sight. This light is a reflection of the thought we practice now. To feel the Love of God within you is to see the world anew, shining in innocence, alive with hope, and blessed with perfect charity and love.

2 Who could feel fear in such a world as this? It welcomes you, rejoices that you came, and sings your praises as it keeps you safe from every form of danger and of pain. It offers you a warm and gentle home in which to stay a while. It blesses you throughout the day and watches through the night as silent guardian of your holy sleep. It sees salvation in you and protects the light in you in which it sees its own. It offers you its flowers and its snow in thankfulness for your benevolence.

3 This is the world the Love of God reveals. It is so different from the world you see through darkened eyes of malice and of fear that one belies the other. Only one can be perceived at all. The other one is wholly meaningless. A world in which forgiveness shines on everything and peace offers its gentle light to everyone is inconceivable to those who see a world of hatred, rising from attack, poised to avenge, to murder and destroy.

4 Yet is the world of hatred equally unseen and inconceivable to those who feel God's Love in them. Their world reflects the quietness and peace that shines in them, the gentleness and innocence they see surrounding them, the joy with which they look out from the endless wells of joy within. What they have felt in them they look upon and see its sure reflection everywhere.

5 What would you see? The choice is given you. But learn and do not let your mind forget this law of seeing: you will look upon that which you feel within. If hatred finds a place within your heart, you will perceive a fearful world, held cruelly in death's sharp-pointed, bony fingers. If you feel the Love of God within you, you look out upon a world of mercy and of love.

6 Today we pass illusions as we seek to reach to what is true in us and feel Its all-embracing tenderness, Its Love Which knows us perfect as Itself, Its sight which is the gift Its Love bestows on us. We learn the way today. It is as sure as Love Itself, to Which it carries us. For its simplicity avoids the snares the foolish convolutions of the world's apparent reasoning but serve to hide.

7 Simply do this: be still and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is, all concepts you have learned about the world, all images you hold about yourself. Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false or good or bad, of every thought it judges worthy and all the ideas of which it is ashamed. Hold onto nothing. Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. Forget this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.

8 Is it not He Who knows the way to you? You need not know the way to Him. Your part is simply to allow all obstacles that you have interposed between the Son and God the Father to be quietly removed forever. God will do His part in joyful and immediate response. Ask and receive. But do not make demands nor point the road to God by which He should appear to you. The way to reach Him is merely to let Him be. For in that way is your reality acclaimed as well.

9 And so today we do not choose the way in which we go to Him. But we do choose to let Him come. And with this choice we rest. And in our quiet hearts and open minds His Love will blaze its pathway of itself. What has not been denied is surely there if it be true, and can be surely reached. God knows His Son and knows the way to him. He does not need His Son to show Him how to find His way. Through every opened door His Love shines outward from its home within and lightens up the world in innocence.

10 Father, we do not know the way to You. But we have called, and You have answered us. We will not interfere. Salvation's ways are not our own, for they belong to You. And it is unto You we look for them. Our hands are open to receive Your gifts. We have no thoughts we think apart from You and cherish no beliefs of what we are or who created us. Yours is the way that we would find and follow. And we ask but that Your Will, which is our own as well, be done in us and in the world, that it become a part of Heaven now. Amen.

Chapter 17
 Forgiveness and Healing

I. Introduction
 par 1-2
1 The betrayal of the Son of God lies only in illusions, and all his "sins" are but his own imagining. His reality is forever sinless. He need not be forgiven, but awakened. In his dreams he has betrayed himself, his brothers, and his God. Yet what is done in dreams has not been really done. It is impossible to convince the dreamer that this is so, for dreams are what they are because of their illusion of reality. Only in waking is the full release from them, for only then does it become perfectly apparent that they had no effect on reality at all and did not change it. Fantasies change reality. That is their purpose. They cannot do so in reality, but they can do so in the mind that would have reality different.

2 It is, then, only your wish to change reality that is fearful, because by your wish you think you have accomplished what you wish. This strange position in a sense acknowledges your power. Yet by distorting it and devoting it to "evil," it also makes it unreal. You cannot be faithful to two masters who ask of you conflicting things. What you use in fantasy, you deny to truth. Yet what you give to truth to use for you is safe from fantasy.

Chapter 17
 Forgiveness and Healing

II. Fantasy
and Distorted Perception
 par 3-6
3 When you maintain that there must be order of difficulty in miracles, all you mean is that there are some things you would withhold from truth. You believe that truth cannot deal with them only because you would keep them from truth. Very simply, your lack of faith in the power that heals all pain arises from your wish to retain some aspects of reality for fantasy. If you but realized what this must do to your appreciation of the whole! What you reserve unto yourself, you take away from Him Who would release you. Unless you give it back, it is inevitable that your perspective on reality be warped and uncorrected.

4 As long as you would have it so, so long will the illusion of order of difficulty in miracles remain with you. For you have established this order in reality by giving some of it to one teacher and some to another. And so you learn to deal with part of truth in one way and in another way the other part. To fragment truth is to destroy it by rendering it meaningless. Orders of reality is a perspective without understanding, a frame of reference for reality to which it cannot really be compared at all.

5 Think you that you can bring truth to fantasy and learn what truth means from the perspective of illusions? Truth has no meaning in illusion. The frame of reference for its meaning must be itself. When you try to bring truth to illusions, you are trying to make illusions real and keep them by justifying your belief in them. But to give illusions to truth is to enable truth to teach that the illusions are unreal and thus enable you to escape from them. Reserve not one idea aside from truth, or you establish orders of reality which must imprison you. There is no order in reality because everything there is true.

6 Be willing, then, to give all you have held outside the truth to Him who knows the truth and in Whom all is brought to truth. [Salvation from separation will be complete or will be not at all.] Be not concerned with anything except your willingness to have this be accomplished. He will accomplish it; not you. But forget not this: When you become disturbed and lose your peace of mind because another is attempting to solve his problems through fantasy, you are refusing to forgive yourself for just this same attempt. And you are holding both of you away from truth and from salvation. As you forgive him, you restore to truth what was denied by both of you. And you will see forgiveness where you have given it.

Chapter 17
 Forgiveness and Healing

III. The Forgiven World
 par 7-13
7 Can you imagine how beautiful those you forgive will look to you? In no fantasy have you ever seen anything so lovely. Nothing you see here, sleeping or waking, comes near to such loveliness. And nothing will you value like unto this nor hold so dear. Nothing that you remember that made your heart seem to sing with joy has ever brought you even a little part of the happiness this sight will bring you. For you will see the Son of God. You will behold the beauty which the Holy Spirit loves to look upon and which He thanks the Father for. He was created to see this for you until you learn to see it for yourself. And all His teaching leads to seeing it and giving thanks with Him.

8 This loveliness is not a fantasy. It is the real world, bright and clean and new with everything sparkling under the open sun. Nothing is hidden here, for everything has been forgiven, and there are no fantasies to hide the truth. The bridge between that world and this is so little and so easy to cross that you could not believe it is the meeting place of worlds so different. Yet this little bridge is the strongest thing that touches on this world at all. This little step, so small it has escaped your notice, is a stride through time into eternity and beyond all ugliness into beauty that will enchant you and will never cease to cause you wonderment at its perfection.

9 This step, the smallest ever taken by anything, is still the greatest accomplishment of all in God's plan of Atonement. All else is learned, but this is given, complete and wholly perfect. No one but Him Who planned salvation could complete it thus. The real world, in its loveliness, you learn to reach. Fantasies are all undone, and no one and nothing remains still bound by them, and by your own forgiveness, you are free to see. Yet what you see is only what you have made, with the blessing of your forgiveness on it. And with this final blessing of God's Son upon himself, the real perception, born of the new perspective he has learned, has served its purpose.

10 The stars will disappear in light, and the sun which opened up the world to beauty will vanish. Perception will be meaningless when it has been perfected, for everything that has been used for learning will have no function. Nothing will ever change; no shifts nor shadings, no differences, no variations which made perception possible will occur. The perception of the real world will be so short that you will barely have time to thank God for it. For God will take the last step swiftly when you have reached the real world and have been made ready for Him.

12 All this beauty will rise to bless your sight as you look upon the world with forgiving eyes. For forgiveness literally transforms vision and lets you see the real world reaching quietly and gently across chaos and removing all illusions which had twisted your perception and fixed it on the past. The smallest leaf becomes a thing of wonder and a blade of grass a sign of God's perfection. From the forgiven world, the Son of God is lifted easily into his home. And there he knows that he has always rested there in peace. Even salvation will become a dream and vanish from his mind. For salvation is the end of dreams and with the closing of the dream will have no meaning. Who awake in Heaven could dream that there could ever be need of salvation?

13 How much do you want salvation? It will give you the real world, trembling with readiness to be given you. The eagerness of the Holy Spirit to give you this is so intense He would not wait, although He waits in patience. Meet His patience with your impatience at delay in meeting Him. Go out in gladness to meet with your Redeemer and walk with him in trust out of this world and into the real world of beauty and forgiveness.

Sarah's Reflections
Lesson 189
I feel the Love of God
within me now.
Sarah's Commentary:

This is another beautiful Lesson that is so similar to what we focused on in the Lesson yesterday. It is all about the light in our right minds that we cannot access when the darkness of the ego thought system prevails. Yet we do have access to this light when we choose the thought system being taught by Jesus through this Course. He tells us precisely what we are to do, which is to let go of all that stands in the way. Forgiveness is about releasing the thought system that reflects our decision to listen and follow the false self. It is a choice we made to separate from the love given us in our creation. If this is the case and the love is in us now, why do we not experience consistent peace and joy? It is only because we are blocking it from our awareness. We have identified with the separate, individual, and special self that we think we are. We think we are on our own and have to figure out this life and successfully solve the problems that show up in form so we can be happy; but, it is all a smokescreen set up by the ego to keep us distracted, rather than looking within. It is like trying to participate with the characters in a movie by thinking we can solve the problems of the characters on the screen. There is nothing we can do in form that will ever bring us the love we seek because we already have it. We must go within to connect with the place in us where the light dwells.

It is in the experience of the holy instant, where in that instant we connect deeply with peace, love, innocence, joy, gentleness, quietness, and hope in a moment of blissful silence, that all of our thoughts, hopes, expectations, and concerns are stilled for just a moment. This light is in us now, and it is intended to be known. "It was not placed in you to be kept hidden from your sight." (W.189.1.5) In the Text, Jesus reminds us, "There is a light that this world cannot give. Yet you can give it, as it was given you. And as you give it, it shines forth to call you from the world and follow it. For this light will attract you as nothing in this world can do. And you will lay aside the world and find another." (T.13.VI.11.1-5) (ACIM OE T.12.VI.55)

What is it that keeps us from experiencing this light that is in us all the time? Jesus says that we are "blinded by the world," (W.189.1.2) But "To feel the Love of God within you is to see the world anew, shining in innocence, alive with hope." (W.189.1.7) This is the real world, but it is not external. This world reflects the love in our minds. In this experience, whatever happens is no longer of concern to us because there is an awareness that we are not the dream figures in this dream but, in fact, we are the dreamer of the dream. How can what happens in the dream affect you when you know that you are the one dreaming it? From outside of the dream, nothing here is real nor has any real consequence. When we see ourselves as figures in the dream, we feel vulnerable, and as a result, we set up defenses to protect ourselves. Our awakening from the dream is preceded by a change of perception from wrong-minded to right-minded perception and with it comes the experience of the real world.

"Who could feel fear in such a world as this? It welcomes you, rejoices that you came, and sings your praises as it keeps you safe from every form of danger and of pain. It offers you a warm and gentle home in which to stay a while." (W.189.2.1-3) The real world is a state of healed perception that precedes Heaven. "This is the world the Love of God reveals." (W.189.3.1) It is not the world we experience when we identify with the ego and see ourselves as a figure in the dream that is being acted on. The world becomes meaningless when seen from the perspective of the dreamer of this dream. From the perspective of the ego mind, the world is full of hatred and attack of every kind. Yet it is only the hatred and attack in the mind that is so intolerable to us that we project it out, and now we see it in the world.

The world we see is an outward expression of our inner condition. "Perception makes projection." (T.21.IN.1.1) (ACIM OE T.21.I.1) The world we see is a projection of our own thoughts. It is a giant projector screen where we see what is in our own minds. "You will look upon that which you feel within." (W.189.5.3) Everyone on the projector screen offers us another opportunity to look within and see what wounds we are holding onto that are projected outward. It takes great honesty and courage to look at these wounds, without judgment and without defending against them. Our suffering is nothing but our resistance to taking responsibility for our projections. When we say "yes" to whatever we are experiencing and see everything as helpful for our healing, there is no need for suffering. Allow yourself to experience fully what is coming up because, without resistance, the feelings and emotions that have been kept suppressed can be brought to the light, and they will dissipate. Now the blocks to love are released.

I am not saying there are not events in the world that reflect behaviors that are hateful and attacking. These behaviors are facts. Yet our interpretation of these facts is what upsets us. For example: someone may take your money. That is a fact. They have the money you had and now you don't have it, but only your interpretation that you have been hurt and the thief deserves to be punished causes you pain. As Jesus tells us, "Perhaps it will be helpful to remember that no one can be angry at a fact." (Manual for Teachers.17.4.1) When we interpret the act of taking money by someone who is a thief, we are accusing ourselves of thievery, but what have we stolen? We believe the ego's story that we have stolen our identity from God, but we don't want to see this in ourselves. We prefer to see the thief as outside of ourselves.

However, we are being shown there is nothing outside of us. Everything starts in our own minds. When we are not willing to look within but instead see the problem outside ourselves, we are helpless to do anything about it. We are reacting to our interpretations as if they were correct. "This is shown by the fact that you react to your interpretations as if they were correct." (T.12.I.2.3) (ACIM OE T.11.I.2) Now we defend those interpretations, and we suffer as a result. "Under the circumstances, would it not be more desirable to have been wrong, even apart from the fact that you were wrong?" (T.13.IV.3.1) (ACIM OE T.12.IV.25) When we recognize that "Perception is a mirror, not a fact," (W.304.1.3) we become more willing to investigate what is being mirrored that is unhealed within the mind. The temptation is always to blame instead of to look within. Only by looking within can we heal our own misperceptions.

I had a discussion with someone last night about the ills of the world and all of the crises going on with everything seemingly getting worse. Many people are being challenged by the economic
conditions. The world we see seems full of problems, and no matter how hard we try, they continue generation after generation. Yet that is precisely why the world was made. It was made to distract us by placing our focus on the screen where all these activities seem to be taking place. This is why the Lesson says that we are "blinded by the world." (W.189.1.2) "Yet you have eyes to see it." (W.189.1.3) The truth will not be seen through our body's eyes, but when we identify with the right minded perception, we will see with vision. Vision has nothing to do with the body's eyes that were made not to see. Their seeing stops at the forms of the world. Behind these images, lies the real world.

We cannot see both worlds. It is either a world of malice or the real world. The pictures are mutually exclusive. "Yet is the world of hatred equally unseen and inconceivable to those who feel God's Love in them." (W.189.4.1) Yes, we will still see the misbehaviors in the world, but we do not need to see them as anything real, and they do not have to disturb our peace. "What would you see? The choice is given you. But learn and do not let your mind forget this law of seeing: You will look upon that which you feel within. If hatred finds a place within your heart, you will perceive a fearful world, held cruelly in death's sharp-pointed, bony fingers. If you feel the Love of God within you, you will look out on a world of mercy and of love." (W.189.5.1-5)

The real world is only experienced when we forgive everyone. This means there can be no exceptions made. No one can be excluded from our forgiveness. We must make a total commitment to this journey within the mind. It takes a lot of disciplined work, but it is a wonderful use of time. Jesus reminds us that to delay the healing of our minds is tragic. He is not trying to coerce us but only remind us on behalf of our own happiness, since he knows how we suffer when we follow the dictates of the ego. We cannot do this alone; we need the power of the Holy Spirit, Who is always available to us when we call on Him. He is in our right minds. He is the light that is always there to shine away the darkness of our egoic thoughts.

Ask yourself today, "What do I have to give over to the Holy Spirit for healing in order to feel the love of God within me now? How much desire and willingness do I have to stay vigilant to the workings of my mind?" It means looking at the reactions that we have to everything that seems to be happening. We can no longer cherish our grievances, our self-concepts, all the images we hold about ourselves, all our beliefs about what is good or bad, and all our judgments about what we like or do not like. Imagine the honesty and courage that goes into this kind of self-revelation. This is why it is so important to be watchful of our thoughts, observing them without judgment and allowing the Holy Spirit to be the Guide, rather than listening to the voice of the ego. With willingness and desire for healing and honesty in looking at our thoughts, the Love of God that is always within us will shine forth. We become a channel of His love and His peace.

Look at the ways you define yourself as a man/woman, father/mother, employee, Course student, good cook, talented singer, or whatever else. Now, look at the rules you have for your relationships and the expectations you have of the people in your life. When these expectations are not met, we have grievances. As Jesus explains, it is because we see ourselves as different from the other, rather than the same. I am me and you are not. Further, we see our needs as more important. You are the means to my end. Thus, I am always the important one in any relationship, and you are there to attend to my needs. All the rules of behavior, all the roles, all the expectations, and all my concepts of what I need to be happy create the dance of specialness. That is why we must look at it all and raise everything to awareness. Otherwise, we simply operate on automatic pilot, reacting as we always have. Instead, Jesus asks us to "Simply do this: Be still and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself." (W.189.7.1) He is telling us to hold onto nothing we think and believe. He tells us that we have been wrong about everything. He wants us to remember that the problem and the solution are not in changing anything in the world of form, but only in our own minds. He is asking us not to determine how any problem is to be solved, as it can never be solved where it is not, which is in the outer forms of this world.

"Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. Forget this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God." (W.189.7.4-5) He is not proposing that we put the Course down and do no more Lessons and no more study. We have more to do at this stage. However, it is ultimately about letting everything go, including this Course, as a prerequisite to entering this state of Oneness with God in our meditation time. To know the Course is not enough. Ultimately, it is about the experience that comes when we are willing to apply this teaching. It is about letting go of the past and the future. Jesus wants us to forget what we have taught ourselves because we have been badly taught. We must let go of everything we have learned and allow ourselves to open up to being taught. "Let us be still an instant, and forget all things we ever learned, all thoughts we had, and every preconception that we hold of what things mean and what their purpose is. Let us remember not our own ideas of what the world is for. We do not know. Let every image held by everyone be loosened from our minds and swept away." (T.31.I.12.1-3) (ACIM OE T.31.I.12) It certainly does require surrendering our way, which requires great humility. Just notice how much reluctance shows up in this process---how much we want to hold onto our own answers, our point of view, our perspectives, and ultimately our control over our own lives.

We block the experience of the holy instant by thinking that we can figure it all out instead of releasing everything we think we know. "You need not know the way to Him. Your part is simply to allow all obstacles that you have interposed between the Son and God the Father to be quietly removed forever." (W.189.8.2-3) This is the arrogance of the ego, where we think we can know the way, and where we defend our beliefs and strategies instead of just emptying our minds and asking to receive. We do not need to point out the way nor make demands. "Ask and receive. But do not make demands, nor point the road to God by which He should appear to you." (W.189.8.5-6) Isn't this what we do when we ask God for the answer to a specific problem that we seem to be facing? We are telling Him that we know what the problem is and that we have determined the answer that we want from Him, but it is not up to us to choose the way.

Our part is to set aside what we think we know, and let Him come. It is a decision we must make to surrender our way. We just need to "step back and let Him lead the way." (W.155) We just need to "Rest in God," (W.109) and as we turn over all our self-attack and self-hatred (which we generally defend against) for healing, the Holy Spirit then offers us the miracle. He knows the way; so let us lay down our belief that we will find the way on our own. Let go of interfering thoughts, concepts, values, beliefs, and expectations. All we have to do is open the door, be willing to call out to Him for help, and then be willing to watch our thoughts and leave the rest to Him. The mistake we make is to put ourselves in charge of our healing instead of letting the Holy Spirit do the healing for us. We cannot heal ourselves. We need Someone from outside of the matrix to do the healing for us. Our part is to bring the blocks to the inner altar and place them there.

"Father, we do not know the way to You. But we have called, and You have answered us. We will not interfere. Salvation's ways are not our own, for they belong to You. And it is unto You we look for them. Our hands are open to receive Your gifts. We have no thoughts we think apart from You, and cherish no beliefs of what we are, or Who created us. Yours is the way that we would find and follow. And we ask but that Your Will, which is our own as well, be done in us and in the world, that it become a part of Heaven now . " Amen . (W.189.10.1-10)

If we pray with true desire to know the truth about the Self we are, we must start by admitting that we do not know. We have to admit that we are lost, and that we cannot figure out our own way. We release the "I know" mind and simply allow everything to come up for healing. Just because it is all illusion doesn't mean we can simply glide past it. Having the courage to look at the concepts, beliefs, and demands we make of others, and the wounds we are holding onto, is easier when we open up and allow the light of Truth to come forth.

This is such a favorite Lesson of mine because it is ultimately the whole Course summed up in terms of what we are to do every day to have the experience of the holy instant and to truly feel the Love of God.
