Hello ACLC Community!
Last Friday, we had 10 cubic yards of mulch delivered to complete the project started last year to beautify the courtyard next to the Center. This was only possible thanks to a donation from CCEF, and the entirety of the mulch (a mound about the size of your average car) was spread out and the area cleaned up by a group of learners in under 3 hours. As Dave Hoopes and I looked at the finished product on that gorgeous afternoon, I had only one thought.
This is ACLC.
Parents, learners, and facilitators all came together to work on a project to make our community a better place. This is what ACLC was founded on, and I am incredibly excited to continue to work this semester on some even bigger projects that will make ACLC an even better place for our learners!
To a great second semester,
Jeremy Goodreau

Greetings ACLC Community,
We are excited to report that the portable project CLCS has been working on for three years is coming to fruition. AUSD currently has the project out to bid and we anticipate having the bids in by the beginning of February. From there, we will work with AUSD to pick a contractor and create a timeline for portable installation. ACLC will receive two classroom portables, a shared restroom portable, and a shared administrative portable. We look forward to bringing you more details in the near future.
Warmly,
Annalisa Moore

Geometry finished the semester solidifying their understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem by creating Pythagorean spirals also known as the Wheel of Theodorus. Abigail Allen said, "The math behind it was good because everyone had the same base but what was cool is where everyone went with the math." Chloe Phan said, "The math was really cool because it was fun and we got better with the Pythagorean Theorem".
Learners were inspired to create beautiful art while the same time deepening their understanding of this important geometry concept!

Dear ACLC Families,
It's Katie Kovach again, your school boxtops coordinator! I just want to remind you to keep collecting your boxtops! The next deadline for submissions is in late February and learners can receive
1 service hour for every 50 boxtops they collect. This is great opportunity for learners to work toward their mandatory 20 service hour requirement. Hope everyone had a nice break!

Thank you all for your Annual Fund Drive contributions. Because of your donations we have been able to edge closer to our fund raising goal of $70,000. CCEF wants to keep saying YES to every request that comes in but we can't do that without you. If you haven't yet donated to the Annual Fund please consider doing so. Here's the link
https://www.clcschools.org/page.cfm?p=308. I promise it only takes a few minutes- you can do a one time donation or a monthly pledge.
Last month we were able to fund: Field Trips to SFMOMA, San Jose Tech Museum and MoAD; Senior Graduation Dinner and a new microphone for CCC.
We are looking forward to saying YES at the February CCEF Board Meeting on
2/28 at 6:45pm in The Center. You are welcome to join and see what it's all about! Or bring your funding ideas (funding request forms are available in the office or email me at
jgbleecker@gmail.com and I'll send one to you).
Finally, let's get cooking!! CCEF Annual Chili Cookoff is bubbling over with excitement. We hope you will be able to join us on
March 3rd at the Elks Lodge. Tickets will soon be available on-line. Interested in have a team joining the cookoff? Let me know!
Hope to see you soon!

Two weeks ago, as a culminating project, the Sophomore class presented their creative interpretations of a scene from the play "Antigone." Learners creativity blazed with puppet shows, green screen videos, voiceover comics, live performances, raps and singing. This project reinforces the idea that when you give learners choice they will always amaze you with their ambitious creativity and enthusiasm.

Political and Proud! An Encinal Invitation |
Hi there!
My name is Lily Conable and I am a student at Encinal HS in Alameda, CA. Currently, I am working with my friends Anisya Lustig-Ellison and Sarah Skaff to organize an event called Political and Proud which will be taking place on February 21st, 2018 from 6-8pm in the Encinal HS gym.
Political and Proud is a completely youth-run and led event that aims to encourage women and girls to get involved in politics, advocate for their rights, and run for office. We are honored to host multiple speakers including keynote speaker, CA Senator Nancy Skinner and Civil Rights Attorney, Pamela Price. The event will even include a special welcome video from Women's March Treasurer, Carmen Perez.
Political and Proud is proud to be partnered with various local organizations including Girls Inc. of the Island City, the Women's March of Oakland, and March for Our Future. It also will include participating organizations like the Alameda League of Women Voters (there will be voter reg), IGNITE, Solidarity Sundays, and more.
We would love to have a big showing of ACLC students (middle and hs)!
Best,
Lily Conable
