President's Message
Spring is here – hooray!! I hope this finds you all well. Our volunteers, Committees, Council, and Executive Council members have been hard at work developing new plans and initiatives and putting together a truly outstanding scientific meeting. Thanks to all who have already submitted panels, mini-panels, and study groups reflecting your latest research.

The Challenges of Annual Meeting Locations
When I started with ACNP in 2005, our meeting nicely fit in the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island in Hawaii. We had 750-850 attendees at that time. Fast forward 18 years, we are no longer a small, intimate meeting. Last year, attendance broke the 2,000 mark.

NPP is seeking submissions for
Early Career Commentaries!
| |
Early Career Commentaries provide a platform for trainees and early-stage investigators (ESIs) to share their ideas and perspectives. All authors must be trainees or ESIs. This requirement provides a venue for new voices to publish their ideas independently of mentors or senior colleagues.
Pre-submission inquiries must be sent to journal@acnp.org.
If the inquiry gets accepted, authors will be invited to submit the full article, after which the manuscript will undergo peer review. To learn more, visit: https://www.nature.com/npp/announcements

What the SfN Hill Day events meant to them!
Reading and watching the news provides an incredibly distorted and diminutive view of the inner workings of government – especially in highly politicized topics such as budgets and the use of animals in science. The opportunity to speak with congressional members and their staff gave me a completely different outlook: they are eager to hear from their constituents and put the faces of neuropsychiatric research to their memoranda. The Society for Neuroscience prepared us incredibly well for the task, and I very much enjoyed telling my story and discussing how government can help in reaching our goals. I look forward to building upon this experience to further help advocate for robust governmental support for neuroscience-related research funding, equity in trainee stipends and opportunities, and promotion of well-regulated and ethical use of animals in research. Lastly, I would encourage any member of the ACNP community – particularly trainees – to participate in this wonderful experience!
William Li
It was an honor to represent ACNP at SfN’s 17th Annual Capitol Hill Day. Along with my colleagues at UCLA, UC San Francisco, and Scripps Research Institute, I met with several people from congressional offices to advocate for robust and consistent investment in biomedical and neuroscience research at NIH, NSF, and VA. We also asked congressional offices to support animal research that is already well regulated and ethical. This was my first time participating in the event, but SfN offered several training sessions on advocacy that eased my nerves and I felt well-prepared to take part in the activities. As a Hispanic scientist who has benefited from NIH training fellowships, I was able to emphasize that NIH funds are not only used to support cutting-edge research but also to ensure that the next generation of neuroscientists include traditionally underrepresented minorities and other people from diverse backgrounds. I look forward to particpating in the events next year!

The 8th Annual Biomedical Research Awareness Day was celebrated on April 20th and was a huge success!
With over 235 celebrations around the world (up from last year!), this was the biggest BRAD to date. Individuals and institutions joined to honor the critical role of animals in biomedical research while educating their community and increasing acceptance and understanding of animal research.

What is the ACNP/AMP BRAD Fellowship? | |
How to apply to be the next ACNP/AMP BRAD Fellow:
APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
Early-stage investigators and postdoctoral fellows are eligible for the ACNP/AMP BRAD Fellowship, an exciting opportunity to gain science communication and advocacy experience for the importance of animals in biomedical research! You can learn more about the Fellowship, including relevant deadlines and instructions for applying, on the BRAD website.
Applications for the 2023-2024 ACNP/AMP-BRAD Fellowship are now open for early career scientists through June 1! Please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Logan France (logan@amprogress.org) and current BRAD fellow Dr. Lana Grasser (grasserlr@nih.gov) with any questions.

"Support a Scientist" Update and Volunteers
| |
Support a Scientist is an ACNP/AMP BRAD video series project providing a platform for scientists to talk about their research with a wider audience. The project aims are to provide a “face” to science, establish importance of a specific area of research,
highlight the role of animal research in the study, and offer insights on how science is conducted. All of the Support a Scientist videos are posted on the BRAD website, shared on social media, and can also be featured in ACNP member communications, website and social media feeds as well as shared with public audiences.
We are looking for more scientists to highlight, and encourage you to nominate an animal researcher you know (including postdoctoral fellows) using this signup link or by reaching out to us at BRAD@amprogress.org. Guidance is provided to scientists on how to shape their message for the public, and more information about the program is available upon request.
