Though healthcare disparities are not new, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the starkest and glaring gaps in care to the forefront. While the healthcare industry and federal and local governments have in some ways stepped up to tackle health equity, experts agree there is still a long way to go. From the need for better data collection to price transparency, the way the current system is set up is not working for everyone. Fierce Healthcare got comments from more than two dozen healthcare stakeholders about what they think is next for health equity in 2022. Here are the biggest takeaways…
Value-based care continues to take root in healthcare. It’s clear the future of reimbursement will at minimum include a heaping portion of providers being paid for value as opposed to volume. This is why, as the new year approaches, Healthcare IT News sat down with an expert in value-based care to get his views on what 2022 will hold for the payment system. Caravan Health President and CEO Tim Gronniger previously was chief of staff and director of delivery system reform at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Managed Healthcare Executive | December 22, 2021
It has been nearly two years since the start of the pandemic, and the changes to health care delivery during this time have been significant. Providers across all specialties have had to continuously adapt the ways they offer care to ensure their patients keep receiving the services they need, when they need them. This has involved ramping up and sustaining telemedicine capabilities; continuing preventive services despite fluctuating case numbers and staffing shortages; rethinking crisis communications to keep people abreast of changing protocols; and attending to social determinants of health (SDOH) that can limit timely access to care.
Most healthcare payments made in 2020 were tied in some way to value or quality of care, according to the latest data from the Health Care Payment Learning & Action Network (LAN). The LAN’s latest APM Measurement report showed that 40.9 percent of US healthcare payments, representing approximately 238.8 million Americans and over 80 percent of the covered population, stemmed from value-based reimbursement models last year.
