Central to the controversy about ACOs’ potential for Value-Based Care is whether they actually save enough money and reduce costs fast enough. Researchers and advocates have produced various independent studies of ACO savings, the most generous estimating $1.8 billion in cumulative savings over the first three years of the program, almost double CMS estimates. Many others, however, dismiss the small proportion of savings—at a few percentage points—relative to total Medicare spending.
Premier | April 27, 2021

Earlier this month, Premier hosted a panel on value-based care (VBC), with providers from across the healthcare continuum discussing its merits and pitfalls. In attendance were members of Congress and their staffers to hear how precisely VBC has been effective and policy changes needed to continue its forward progress. One message came through above all others: VBC has unshackled these providers from the inherent constraints and archaic rules in fee-for-service (FFS) and allowed them to develop innovative models that recenter around the patient.
Managed Healthcare Executive | April 26, 2021
Specialists tend to be valued primarily for their medical expertise, so when a physician takes time to get to know a patient, the doctor is usually praised for having a good bedside manner. But growing evidence shows that knowing about a patient’s life is also crucial to quality of care. For cardiologists, familiarity with those social and educational realities may mean the difference between ineffectual care and achieving desired health outcomes.
Having helped several Medicare Advantage plans achieve significant quality performance improvements (up to 1.1 stars improvement YoY in 2020 alone), Stellar Health (Stellar) is sharing its perspective on what it takes to sustain and improve Star Ratings for health plans and why there is a need for action despite even a few years of success. There is an ever-growing number of Americans (24 million) currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan, doubling over the past decade, and expected to rise significantly by 2030. In light of this growth, MA payors are fighting to accommodate such volume, while remaining competitive.
