Sean Johnson

Hello all,

With Memorial Day just behind us, the summer has unofficially begun. Pools are open, grass is being cut, grills are roaring, and tee times are booked. A wonderful time of the year. Perhaps a summer trip is coming up (shoutout to ACOFP Alaska CME at Sea – whoop whoop). As Family Medicine physicians, we also get to see more sunlight on our travels home and hopefully more enjoyment as the days stretch longer. It’s also a season of new beginnings for those of us taking on medical students as well as new residents eager to begin their careers with a new title and a fresh new long white coat.

I want to encourage each of you to take some time to slow down and enjoy this season. A season of fun can easily (at least for us) turn into a season of “busy” as the calendar begins to fill with plans, kids sports, and other activities. I found myself on a recent family trip trading one kind of busy for another – work and office busy for “fun” busy. While enjoyable, it is easy to feel the need to maximize our fun and time away, and to miss out on relaxing and being fully present with ourselves and our loved ones.

I also want to shout out all those who attended the Ohio Osteopathic Symposium in April. Was a great time to learn and enjoy the Ohio osteopathic community.

Take care,

Sean M. Johnson, DO

ACOFP Executive Director to Retire

Bob Moore, MA, MS, FASAE, CAE, will retire as Executive Director of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), the association announced.

Moore has led the ACOFP for eight years and spent almost 30 years in association management. During his tenure, the organization navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, modernized its operations, diversified its revenue base, strengthened its workplace culture, and significantly grew its philanthropic reach.

Moore told the association he plans to launch an executive advisory and coaching practice that focuses on association and mission-driven leaders.

The Ohio ACOFP extends its sincerest congratulations to Bob on his retirement, expresses gratitude for his service, and offers warmest wishes for the years to come.

SMBO Seeks Comments on Rule Revsions

The State Medical Board of Ohio (SMBO) is asking for comments on rule changes up for initial review. SBMO will review comments received and possibly make changes to the initially proposed language before the rules are then filed with the Common Sense Initiative Office.

The rules being revised are:

  • Regulation of Certified Mental Health Assistants
  • Physician-Delegated Prescriptive Authority
  • Opioid Use Disorder Treatment
  • Provisions of State Medical Board Applicable to Certified Mental Health Assistants

Comments on this set are due by Friday, June 5.

SMBO has separately filed proposed rules with the Common Sense Initiative (CSI) office. This is the second step in the rule revision process during which CSI has assessed any adverse impacts to businesses. The CSI review must be completed before a rule can be submitted for the formal rule-making process through the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review.

During this process, public input is sought. Rules up for consideration pertain to:

  • Pronouncement of Death
  • Surgery standards
  • Delegation of Medical Tasks
  • Radiologist Assistant Certification

Comments are due by Friday, June 12.

ODM Launches Fraud Detection, Analytics Platform

The Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) announced a new investment intended to enhance program integrity and protect taxpayer dollars, the agency said.

The tool, which has been recognized nationally, comes as part of an expanded contract with Milliman, Inc. The Healthcare Anomaly Detection Platform uses advanced modeling, predictive analytics, and transparent risk scoring to help ODM quickly identify potential fraud, waste, and abuse.

The system surfaces potential fraud cases and provides actionable, auditable evidence, according to ODM. By producing a composite risk score for providers, Milliman’s tool enables program integrity teams to quickly prioritize investigations and uncover coordinated fraud networks.

The on-demand virtual CME conference is open but closing soon! Thanks to the Ohio Osteopathic Association's partnership, the 6th rendition of the VOCCME virtual osteopathic education program comes with an OOA member discount.
