Getting to Know You, Getting to Know All About You
An interview with new ACPM President, Dr. Bob Carr
Q: What made you want to serve as ACPM President?
A: To be honest, I have more time now to focus energy on areas of interest and passion as I recently transitioned from a 30+ year career as a physician executive. Secondly, ACPM has been an ever-present and nurturing community for me over the years; connecting me with new ideas, insights, evidence based and useful approaches and practices, and a network of colleagues who continue to bring value to my life; a community to which I‘d like to give back, during this chapter of my life.
Finally, and most importantly, the future of our specialty is at risk. While not an alarmist I sense our environment is facing significant pressures and changing more rapidly now than in the past: enormous pressure on government budgets, federal, state and local public health organizations and the current uncertainty on hard fought gains in access to preventive services and funding for prevention medicine training. ...
AMA Recap -- Last week, ACPM attended the American Medical Association's House of Delegates Annual meeting with delegate Dr. Robert Gilchick and alternate delegate Dr. Jason Spangler. ACPM's delegates and partners in the Section Council for Preventive Medicine were successful in getting an ACPM-authored resolution on supporting taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages passed in the House of Delegates to become AMA policy.
In the News -- ACPM has been in the news with two op-ed pieces in the past month. Past-President Dr. Dan Blumenthal, MD, MPH, FACPM had a piece published in The Hill regarding the need to focus on prevention in the current healthcare debates. In addition, President Dr. Bob Carr, MD, MPH, FACPM published an op-ed in The Hill on the negative effect the President's budget will have on preventive medicine residency training programs.
Sign-on Letter -- The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, of which ACPM is a member, released a statement on President Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, noting that climate change harms public health. The statement was picked up by NBC News.

Help Patients Prevent the Next Fall: Access Billing Codes and Strategies to Prevent Falls
June brings summer and National Safety Month! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every 20 minutes an older adult dies from a fall in the United States. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Despite the lack of a dedicated Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code, providers are able to counsel their patients regarding falls risk and bill payers using existing Evaluation and Management (E/M) CPT codes.
ACPM and the National Council of Aging have assembled a series of billing codes for reimbursement for falls-related services. The flyer also includes quality measures in the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS), Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) that are used to incentivize providers to conduct falls risk assessment in older adults.
