On April 2, the White House announced "reciprocal tariffs" of at least 10% on all imports. A 10% tariff will apply to imports from all countries effective April 5, and "reciprocal" tariffs based on country of origin will take effect April 9.
Some of the import tariff rates Trump announced during his address Wednesday include:
20% on the European Union
10% on the United Kingdom
34% on China
24% on Japan
32% on Taiwan
There is a short list of goods that are not subject to these tariffs.
For imports from Canada and Mexico, USMCA compliant goods will not be subject to these tariffs. Note that not all products shipped from Canada and Mexico are USMCA compliant, so if you have a shipment coming from Canada or Mexico, documentation of USMCA status is critical. Non-USMCA compliant shipments from Canada and Mexico will continue to see a 25% tariff.
The order also stated that the duty-free de minimis treatment for covered goods from China and Hong Kong will be discontinued effective May 2. Imported goods sent throught means other than the international postal network that are valued at or under $800 and that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption will be be subject to all applicable duties.
