UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENT

Tommy McNamara Charitable Foundation Outdoor Youth Challenge

As you may have read in the February 21, 2025, issue of The Kennebunk Post and the February issue of The Village, the Tommy McNamara Charitable Foundation recently awarded a $25,000 grant to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust to create a hiking trail challenge for local youth. This initiative aims to inspire young people to explore and learn more about the many incredible trails in our area.

From this grant, KCT generously provided $5,000 each to the Arundel Conservation Trust and the Kennebunk Land Trust for trail expansion and improvements to support the challenge—making this a true "three towns, one community" event!

Stay tuned for more details as plans for the event kickoff continue to develop. The challenge is set to begin in May and run through the summer.

"The Great Canoe Loop" Recap

"The Great Canoe Loop" event, which we highlighted last month, was a great success and very well attended, with almost every seat taken! Hosted by Kittery Land Trust and sponsored by area land trusts, including ACT, the event was made possible by the Indigenous Learning & Conservation Collaborative (ILCC). This collaborative effort focuses on Indigenous knowledge and practices for conservation, promoting decolonization, and fostering sustainable land management, particularly in Maine, with a focus on Wabanaki communities.

Last year's runners had great things to say about this event. Many had never done a trail run before and were surprised to discover just how much fun it can be. This one is a flat, shady course that winds throughout the ACT Community Trails and the Eastern Trail. It has also been certified as a Youth Trail run. With the new playground, the Kids Bike Trail Race on our Flow Trail, there is a lot for the family to do while you run.

Archie Adams

Archie Adams is an avid outdoor enthusiast who finds joy in exploring the Arundel Conservation Trust trails with his dog, Finn, paddling along local rivers, and surfing the waves off Maine’s beaches. He first became involved with ACT through Trail Fest and quickly developed a deep appreciation for the opportunity to connect with the Arundel community, local businesses, and fellow outdoor adventurers.

Archie serves on both the Events and Trail Committees, contributing his energy and expertise to strengthening ACT’s mission of conservation and community building. Read more about Archie here!

We'd love to have you join our wonderful volunteer team. We need committee members, trail blazers and day volunteers for our September Trail Fest!

GLIDING THROUGH WINTER IN MAINE

One of my favorite and most blissful winter pastimes in Maine is cross-country skiing. I started writing this post in February when the snow was plentiful, light, and powdery—the kind of idyllic conditions that every Nordic skier hopes for. But as Mark Twain so aptly observed about New England’s ever-changing weather, “There is a sumptuous variety about the New England weather that compels the stranger’s admiration—and regret. The weather is always doing something there…” Read more about Karen's experience with XC skiing in Maine here.

Where in Arundel?

This month's Where in Arundel is looking very Marchy! Make sure you have spikes or proper footwear when heading out on the trails as some spots can still be icy!
