The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission approved draft maps for congressional districts on Oct. 28th. The approved draft has drawn Surprise and the Sun Cities into a rural district running from Colorado to Yuma. This is not a good fit for the Surprise and Sun Cities!

The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) approved draft maps for congressional districts on Oct. 28th. The approved draft has drawn Surprise and Sun Cities into a rural districting running from Colorado to Yuma.

If the current draft is approved our federal representation for the next 10 years will be as part of a rural district that does not share the same needs as the Metro Phoenix Suburb we live and do business with.

We need residents and business owners to take action by commenting with the IRC that Surprise and Sun Cities should be placed in a Maricopa County suburban district that better represents our communities of interest and a compact district.

  2. Select “Draft Map” when asked. When asked “What draft map would you like to comment on” answer “Approved CD Draft 7.1.”
  3. Sample Comment: I live and do business in Surprise and the Sun Cities. The current draft map has my community as part of an overwhelming rural district that has little in common with a Phoenix suburb like ours. To fulfill the obligation of a map that maintains communities of interest and a compact district Surprise should be drawn into one of the adjoining suburban districts. District 8 is my recommendation as the communities represented in district 8 are similar in make-up, have crossed over in school association, and business territory.
