Dear Cultural Advocates, 


Last night, DOGE cancelled or rescinded hundreds of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant contracts nationwide, including those of Humanities Washington’s and other Washington-based cultural organizations. Upwards of $10 million in cultural funding in Washington is at stake. Click this link for the ACTION ALERT to learn more and send a letter your members of Congress to protect this vital cultural resource! And if you missed our last action alert about Museums and Libraries, click here.


About the Action Alert

When completed, this action alert will go to Senators Murray and Cantwell as well as your district Representative. We have crafted a letter about the importance of NEH to Washington communities and feel confident about its content. HOWEVER, your letter to your Congresspeople will be more effective if you add a personal message. The letter is editable and if you have time, we urge you to share something at the top about yourself, family, and/or community. If you work for an organization that receives NEH support, talk about the program and how people will be affected if funding is cut. For example, will there be an employment or economic outcome? How will your community be impacted? Who will lose their gathering space?


Here's what you can do to help and make a difference – every voice, email, call, letter, and social media post counts!

  1. Complete the Action Alert and send a message to your Federal Senators and Representatives urging them to protect NEH and humanities councils.
  2. Forward this email to your networks, particularly in Eastern Washington. 
  3. Share this alert on social media: Use Humanities WA's posts and reshare, tag, or send directly to five people and ask them to take action.
  4. Write an op-ed in your local newspaper or blog explaining the impact these federal dollars have in your state and community. Reach out to Inspire WA or Humanities WA if you need help.
  5. Join Humanities WA's mailing list to be kept up to date on this issue.

There's a lot going on in the Federal government these days, so let's talk about it! Join us on April 3rd at Noon for a Federal Update from Inspire Washington.


At this open public forum, we will:

  • Engage with guests from Creative West who will join us and provide valuable insider info and offer perspectives into other regions of the country
  • Discuss the Executive Orders
  • Strategize advocacy efforts
  • Answer all your questions to the best of our ability
