Take Action on the City Council Vacancy

Dear Democratic Club Members,

Mayor-Elect Duncan and our new City Council will be sworn into office on December 17th. At that time, Duncan’s Council seat, which has two years remaining on its term, will be vacant. According to the City Clerk, Council will decide at that meeting whether to fill the vacant seat by special election or appointment.

There are currently no City Council Policies governing appointment. It is solely at the new City Council’s discretion. There are two grassroots-led petitions circulating in the community that argue for Council to either: (1) call a special election to fill the vacancy or (2) appoint the 3rd place candidate from November’s election. After deliberation, the Democratic Club Board agrees these are the two most democratic options, given that the second and third place candidates were separated by less than 100 votes.

Therefore, we ask you to do the following ACTION ITEMS:

FIRST:

Sign the petition(s) circulating on social media and then share them with friends and neighbors of all persuasions by email and/or social media (this is not a partisan issue). Below are links to both. Click on each link and add your name, then follow the directions to share. You do not need to create an account to sign!

Buzz Hattersly’s Petition

SECOND:

Send an email to Mayor-Elect Duncan and the new City Councilmembers (via the City Clerk), asking them to fill the vacancy using one of the two options outlined above. If you don’t have time to write your own email, a prewritten one is available by clicking here. Feel free to edit it, and don’t forget to type your name in the signature line!

THIRD:

Write letters to the Editors of the Eagle and the Coronado Times on this issue.

FOURTH:

MOST IMPORTANTLY, attend the December 17th City Council meeting and speak on this issue.

Thank you for being a part of this effort to ensure the voters of Coronado have a say about who our 5th Councilmember is!

Thank you for all you do to preserve democracy

and our democratic values.
