Everyone Has the Right to an Accessible Home
An ADANC staff member recently visited a consumer who was having difficulty with the accessibility of her home. Prior to the meeting, the ADANC staff member put together a list of resources that could possibly help the consumer based on their phone conversation.
The consumer told the staff member that she hadn’t showered in a month because she could not step over the tub due to her disability. The consumer decided that she is going to move to a home that is more accessible and then call the home accessibility resources that were recommended if she needs anything changed in the apartment.
The ADANC staff member had referred this consumer to “From Your Neighbor” a while back because she wanted to obtain a powerchair. When the staff member walked into the house, it was in the living room and the consumer shared that she loved it.
Travel Training
A consumer expressed interest in learning the bus route to K-mart on Six Forks Road. She expressed that she wanted to use the safest route where she doesn’t have to cross any major streets.
She preferred routes where she can get off in front of the place and doesn’t have to walk long distances. Her Travel Trainer showed her how to get to K-mart from her home using three bus routes. The first time, they had to cross Six Forks Rd from the bus stop to get to her destination.
The second time, they got off at the stop where the bus goes inbound to Downtown Raleigh. She ensured her travel trainer that she is now comfortable with traveling to K-mart on her own.
