Youth Transition - Building and Learning New Skills
Our staff met with a consumer via zoom this month for Youth Transition Services. This consumer currently works as a Special Education teaching assistant, which is a job he started doing shortly after graduating from high school. While he enjoys the work, he would like to go to college to earn a degree in Special Education. Unfortunately, he currently has a financial barrier to accomplishing this goal.

The Community Inclusion Specialist was able to use her own experiences in the field of special education to show that gaining experience is equally important if not more important than earning a degree. The consumer seemed to feel better after hearing this and said, “he hadn’t thought about it that way.”

The staff member also thought about the idea of the consumer working towards some certificates in the field of special education to build his resume and learn new skills. The consumer really liked this idea and the Community Inclusion Specialist sent him information on certificate programs the next day.
Mastering Travel Training in the Community
A consumer is thriving in his Travel Training. He is finding the routes and still learning his way around Durham Station. He is taking small steps to travel safely. He knows how to get the bus to Southpoint Mall and Harris Teeter, where he works.

He rode the bus independently to Brier Creek to meet with his father. He has expressed interest in learning other bus routes. He plans to learn the DRX (Durham-Raleigh Express) route so he can travel to Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.
