August is here! Today is the 11th Annual World Lung Cancer Day. According to the American Cancer Society’s estimate, in 2022 there were about 236,740 new cases of lung cancer. Help us raise awareness today: ADAO’s research reveals that an estimated 25% of lung cancer deaths may be caused from asbestos exposure.
We have been working hard behind the scenes on several big projects and events that we are excited to share. July was a whirlwind as we submitted comments to the docket for the two EPA proposed rules for Part 1 Chrysotile Asbestos & Asbestos Reporting. We were joined by countless members of the community who spoke in support of strengthening the rule. The recent Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families and ADAO op-ed, Asbestos Has Been a Problem for Decades-- Will This Congress Do Something? showcases what a battle it has been to get this far. While ADAO is grateful to see these landmark steps EPA is taking, we are still aware there is much to be done and we continue to work hard.
On August 17th, ADAO will host our 17th Congressional Staff Briefing, Impact of Asbestos on Public Health, Environment, and Economy, to discuss the past, current, and future impacts of asbestos and the need to move forward to ban all six asbestos fibers. In light of the new Lancet article, Carcinogenicity of occupational exposure as a firefighter, banning asbestos is even more important. Joining me at the briefing will be Barry Castleman, ScD; Raja Flores, MD; Arthur L. Frank, MD, PhD; Brent Kynoch, Managing Director of the Environmental Information Association; Greg Russell, International Association of Fire Fighters; and Robert Sussman, JD. ADAO is thankful to the many professionals who have helped ADAO over the past 18 years.
