While our hearts are heavy with George Floyd’s murder and the pandemic, there is some good news to share.
Johnson & Johnson has finally decided to stop North American sales of talc-based baby powder which has tested positive for asbestos contamination. ADAO was quoted in the excellent New York Times article. Although this is a victory for North America, we have a tremendous amount of work to do internationally.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published the Draft Risk Evaluation for asbestos last month; however, the deadly exclusions grossly underestimate the risk and will not be protective of public health. ADAO held a  Press Conference with 12 experts to discuss the flawed risk evaluation and provide the EPA with the necessary information to update the evaluation and properly protect public health from the lethal carcinogen. We hope the information presented during our press conference, our oral comments at the public meeting, and our docket submissions will lead to a broader and true evaluation of the risk of deadly asbestos during the EPA SACC public meeting was rescheduled for June 8-11 .
