PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As we enter the final months of the year, ADAO is excited by the momentum we continue to see. October was a huge month for us, and we'd love to tell you what we've been up to and what we look forward to in November.
The Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act of 2019 (ARBAN) received a major jolt of momentum last month when two former Environmental Protection Agency Administrators came out in support of the bill. Writing in a New York Times op-ed, Gina McCarthy (appointed by Barack Obama in 2013) and William K. Reilly (appointed by George H.W. Bush in 1989) called for a ban on "all asbestos importation and use, without loopholes or exemptions." The op-ed ruffled some feathers: two Trump EPA members, Administrator Andrew Wheeler and Assistant Administrator Alex Dunn, wrote responses to it, claiming that we need to wait to ban asbestos until the EPA evaluates the risk of remaining asbestos uses. They're wrong - we've been waiting for these evaluations for too long.  ARBAN is steadily advancing in the U.S. House of Representatives and isn't far from a full floor vote.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and ADAO will do our part by participating in several national and international awareness events. On November 18, Dr. Raja Flores will host an educational session for New York City medical students in partnership with Mount Sinai Hospital. The event will focus on the role that physicians can play in advancing asbestos prevention. During Asbestos Awareness Week in Australia, we are proud to be sharing seven Australian "Share Your Stories" and participate in a candlelight vigil for those we have lost to asbestos-related illnesses. On November 20, we look forward to participating in a film screening of Dirty Laundry organized by Dr. Christine Oliver in Toronto, Canada.

As the year slowly starts to come to a close, ADAO would like to take a second to thank everyone who has helped us get this far. This year, we celebrated our 15th anniversary, we have watched ARBAN make progress, we took the Environmental Protection Agency to court over our "Right to Know" about who is importing asbestos and where its going, we led educational sessions around the world, and we shared the stories of those impacted by asbestos. You have fueled our fight and there is no limit to what we can accomplish together.

Thank you for being by our side -- together we make change happen.
