IRHS Project Grad is asking
you for help
Project Grad at Ironwood Ridge High School needs … you.
The safe party for the class of 2021 is set for Wednesday, May 19.
Sixty additional volunteers are needed for event night, with shifts from 9 p.m. to midnight, and midnight to 3:30 a.m. In total, some 200 volunteers make IRHS Project Grad a success, according to Kristy Thornton of the Project Grad committee.
Set-up starts at 4 p.m. Friday, May 14, and runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. that Saturday, May 15. “Many hands make light work,” Thornton said.
Donations are requested as well – snacks, volunteer food donations, money for scholarship tickets to students who may not be able to pay – all the needs are identified at this website. The email address is here.
“There was a ton of support for the seniors last year, but the 2021 grads just are not getting the attention,” a parent said.
The pandemic stalled the party itself; only in the last month or so has Project Grad been officially scheduled, with social distancing required.
“There is a big need for those shifts after midnight — so calling all night owls!” a release said.

ADOT makes OV
section of Oracle an
immediate priority
|
Work to improve Oracle Road between Magee and Calle Concordia in Oro Valley is being accelerated, Oro Valley Town Manager Mary Jacobs said this week.
Granite Construction, contractor on the more than 10-mile project for the Arizona Department of Transportation, now plans to mill and replace pavement on Oracle on that stretch beginning in June, and ending in September.
An ADOT spokeswoman said “ADOT and Granite have prioritized the paving at the north end of the project, and plan to complete this section by the end of the year.”
“This is a major benefit to Oro Valley within the overall project schedule,” Jacobs said in her executive report to mayor and council. Previously, Granite planned to start at the south end of the project, Miracle Mile and coming north on Oracle, this year. Oro Valley work would not have occurred for some months.
“We welcome that schedule change,” Chamber President / CEO Dave Perry said. “Let’s make the improvements during the slower, hot summer, so Oracle is in top condition when our winter visitors arrive in the fall.”

Spotlight guests got a
look inside incubator, high science in OV
|
Guests at your Chamber’s 2021 Greater Oro Valley Bioscience Spotlight on Thursday took a virtual tour of the University of Arizona Center for Innovation at Oro Valley, the community’s brand new bioscience incubator.
They were introduced to the UACI at Oro Valley’s first 2 tenants, represented by Iman Daryaei, Ph.D., principal at TheraCea Pharma, and Dr. Souvenir D. Tachado, president and founder of Souvie Biodelivery.
Young scientist Nelson Alexander, Ph.D., of Chamber Diamond member Roche Tissue Diagnostics told a fascinating story about a promising possibility to improve cancer diagnosis that involves … a food blender. And Nelson talked about the thrilling discovery ecosystem he and others at Roche work within.
Lastly, guests met the recipient of your Chamber’s $10,000 sponsored launch competition – Upetsia, the bioscience startup aiming to improve dog breath (see the story below).
We want to give our special thanks to Eric Smith, executive director of UACI / OV; sponsored launch judges Scott Weible, Alan Dankwerth, Sarah Morris and Matt Lingard; Casey Carrillo of Tech Parks Arizona; Chamber staff members Kristen Sharp, events director, and Duane Macklin, member services director; and Katie and Bill Starr of Anstar Productions Group for their video / digital services.
Missed the live event? Catch the recording here.
Our next major event – the 2021 Annual Meeting and Awards Breakfast, planned for live and in person Thursday, Aug. 19.

Upetsia earns $10K launch prize, added gifts from Chamber
|
Your Chamber has awarded a $10,000 prize to Upetsia, a bioscience startup that aims to improve dog breath with its products.
Don’t scoff – Americans spend nearly $2 billion a year on dog chew products for oral health, and the Upetsia concept could lead to further significant developments in animal oral care.
Upetsia principals Eric Lyons and Scott Zentack told their story and accepted the gift Thursday. That money, good for a year’s tenancy at the University of Arizona Center for Innovation at Oro Valley, is accompanied by in-kind services from Scott Weible of Weible Law Firm, Andrew Hoffman of Rocky Point Technology Group, and David Arond of e-Video Creations.
“It’s so gratifying to see Chamber members step up to help a promising new business!” Chamber President / CEO Dave Perry said.
Upetsia becomes the third tenant at UACI at Oro Valley, joining TheraCea Pharma and Souvie Biodelivery. It expects to start moving in this week.

Fairwinds Desert Point residents win national Fitness Frenzy trophy
|
Chamber member Fairwinds Desert Point and its parent company, Leisure Care, have broken new records at the 7th annual Fitness Frenzy.
Among all Leisure Care’s senior living properties – more than 50 across America – the Oro Valley community topped all participants in the Fitness Frenzy.
“We won the whole thing,” Michael Linzey, the enthusiastic Prime Fit leader at Fairwinds Desert Point, told a gathering of residents ahead of a celebration Thursday.
He hoisted the major trophy to show as much. And, through the challenge, Fairwinds Desert Point was able to generate $3,925 for a donation to Pima County JTED.
“You run a great show here,” Mayor Joe Winfield told Michael and the audience.
Leisure Care community employees, residents, family and friends had 2,081 participants of all ages join in. Participants were active for 1.68 million minutes, and raised $66,000 (and still counting) for grants to support children and families.
At Fairwinds, 266 participants were active for 191,760 minutes during the Fitness Frenzy.
Some Fairwinds residents took the NuStep Challenge, working out on the NuStep recumbent cross trainer to collectively walk the equivalent of an ascent and descent of Mount Lemmon. They made the round trip four times, with more than 200 miles logged. Resident Gleneden Gilmore had the most active minutes, logging 80 miles herself, and won a prize Thursday.
“She is just amazing,” Michael said. “She was in the gym every morning doing an average of 3 to 5 miles a day.”
Fairwinds Desert Point is located at 10701 N. La Reserve Drive in Oro Valley. The phone is 520-498-1111, the website leisurecare.com.

New Ducey order requires
unemployed to seek work
to continue getting benefits
|
This week, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey issued an executive order to meet surging job demand and support job creators throughout Arizona as employment opportunities grow and the COVID-19 vaccine is available for anyone who wants it.
Ducey’s order rescinded a March 2020 order that waived the requirement for people receiving unemployment benefits to actively look for work.
Effective May 23, unemployed people receiving benefits must look for a job.
“A year out from the start of the pandemic, jobs and vaccines are readily available,” Ducey said. “Arizonans are ready to get back to work. Our economy is booming, jobs need filling, more than 2 million Arizonans are fully vaccinated, and vaccination appointments are available to anyone who wants one.
“As President Reagan said, the best social program is a job,” the governor added. “This statement rings true today. Unemployment benefits are still available to Arizonans who need them, but now that plenty of jobs are available, those receiving the benefits should be actively looking for work.”
Arizona is expected to gain more than 325,000 jobs between spring 2020 and the same time next year, a 5.5 percent annualized growth rate.
As of Monday, Arizona has distributed 5.1 million vaccinations, with 2.33 million Arizonans fully vaccinated against the virus.

Northwest Medical, Oro Valley Hospital get 'A’s for safety
|
Chamber Silver members Northwest Medical Center and Oro Valley Hospital received an “A” grade in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing both hospitals’ achievements in protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to healthcare quality and safety.
“We’re excited to receive this distinction, and so proud of the entire team, as everyone played a part in our success,” said Jennifer Schomburg, CEO at Northwest Medical Center and Oro Valley Hospital. “This past year presented us with many challenges, but our team remained committed to safety and patient care.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to all general hospitals across the country, and is updated every six months. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care.
“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of the Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but both Oro Valley Hospital and Northwest Medical Center show us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”
To see both Oro Valley Hospital’s and Northwest Medical Center’s full grade details, and access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit hospitalsafetygrade.org
