As we gear up for another exciting school year, we understand that the transition back to school can sometimes be challenging for our students. To ensure a smooth and positive start, we've compiled a list of valuable resources and strategies designed to beat those back-to-school blues. Let's work together to make this academic year a memorable and successful one! Here are some suggestions to help you navigate the beginning of the school year:
Relieve anxieties about returning to School: Whether your child is returning to the same school or transitioning to a new school, this is a new school year, and they may be nervous. Talk with your child and discuss expectations for the upcoming year and highlight the successes of prior years. If possible, visit the school to learn where classes are and walk the daily routine making sure to identify the restrooms, front office, and drop-off/pick-up locations. Try to meet the teachers and needed administrators on/before the first day. If appropriate, make sure your child knows the services and accommodations provided within the IEP. Finally, discuss transitions - between classes, to/from lunch, and between school/home.
Review Individualized Education Program (IEP): Familiarize yourself with your child's IEP, which outlines their specific educational needs and goals. Ensure that the IEP is up to date and reflects their current requirements. If necessary, schedule a meeting with the school's special education team to discuss any changes or concerns. This is also a great time to organize the paperwork in sequential order.
Establish Communication Channels: Establish open lines of communication with your child's teachers, service providers, school administration, and other relevant staff members. Share your contact information and preferred communication methods, such as email or phone calls, to ensure efficient and effective communication throughout the year.
Get organized: For many students with disabilities, organization can be a struggle. Identify a place at home to place school items and do homework and establish a routine. While it is fun to buy all the coolest school supplies, having minimal supplies to limit the distractions may be helpful. Color coding class materials (same color spiral notebook and loose-leaf folder or tab in larger three ring binder) may be helpful. Finally, find five minutes an evening to organize backpacks, notebooks, and papers so each day starts off smoothly.
