ADS-B for the rest of us remote pilots.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is transforming all segments of aviation including sUAS Flight Operations. Real-time precision, shared situational awareness, advanced applications for manned and unmanned pilots. These are the hallmarks of ADS-B NextGen surveillance.

ADS-B improves safety and efficiency in the air, on the ground, reduces costs and lessens harmful effects on the environment.

The ADS-B (Out) is a mandatory requirement for manned aircraft flying in controlled airspace as shown above.

What this means as that all aircraft in the major airports throughout the US will require an ADS-B (Out) to be able to fly within the Mode C veil.

For the Phoenix Metro that is the large area shown below in the magenta 30 NM circle.

This is great news for the sUAS Remote Pilots flying in this controlled airspace.

All new DJI drone models released after January 1, 2020 that weigh more than 250 grams will include AirSense technology, which receives ADS-B signals from nearby airplanes and helicopters and warns drone pilots if they appear to be on a collision course. This will be the largest single deployment of ADS-B collision awareness technology to date, and sets a new standard by putting professional-grade aviation safety technology in drones available to everyone.

If you fly an ADS-B (In) equipped DJI drone and utilize compliant software, you will be able to take advantage of this trending technology.

So what about non-DJI drones and older models of DJI drones that do not have the ADS-B (In) or if you use third party apps that do not support ADS-B?

There is an inexpensive and easy solution for non-ADS-B (In) equipped drones and third party apps.

Below is an ground support console prototype that I designed for use on my daily flights to assist me to maintain situational awareness when flying in congested airspace. This prototype is being tested thoroughly to develop a final version.

This design and the components (Mini-iPad app, ADS-B [In] and iPhone) that make up the console will be featured in a new book that is being developed.

Conclusion

Safety is the primary concern when flying sUAS in any airspace. Any tool that will aid in situational awareness should be utilized to enhance safety. As the airways get more congested with manned and unmanned traffic, technology such as ADS-B monitoring should be utilized.

The technology is available. It is just a matter of figuring out how to put it all together.

sUAS will not have ADS-B (Out) so it is vitally important to watch and listen for sUAS traffic on every flight.

Keep in mind that not all manned aircraft will have ADS-B (Out). If you are flying in Class G airspace outside of a Mode C veil, you will need to be diligent to watch and listen for manned and as well as unmanned aircraft.
