UPTOWN COUNCIL MEMBER TO HOLD COMMUNITY PARKS WALK TO ADDRESS SAFETY CONCERNS AND VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Elected Leaders, Residents and Parks Organizations to Provide Input on What They'd Like to See Most in Northern Manhattan Parks, in Innovative Community Engagement Event

New York, NY-On Satuday, October 24th, 2013, Council Member Rodriguez will host a community walk through the Northern Manhattan park land west of Broadway. In a creative and innovative way to spur community engagement, Council Member Rodriguez and event partners will give local residents a chance to give on site feedback on the issues plaguing uptown parks and what changes or improvements they would like to see.

In recent weeks, a number of issues have been raised by the community, particularly regarding safety and quality of life concerns. With two attacks taking place in the past month on women walking through Fort Tryon Park, and other safety related worries in Inwood Hill Park and Isham Park, residents are eager to provide feedback on locations of interest and security needs. Additionally, Council Member Rodriguez has raised issues of an increased prevalence of skunks in the parks and negligence on behalf of dog owners when it comes to picking up after their pets.

On a more exciting note, the walk will also provide residents of Inwood and Washington Heights an opportunity to share their own vision about the future of the parks, from minor playground renovations to major capital projects. Residents will be able to discuss and directly point out areas that need improvement or new services. The walk will begin at the New Leaf Caf in Fort Tryon Park and will proceed to Jacob Javitz Playground, through Fort Tryon Park, the Anne Loftus Playground, Dyckman Fields, Inwood Hill Park and end in Isham Park.

Partners include the offices of State Senator Adriano Espaillat, Assembly Member Gabriela Rosa, Council Member Robert Jackson, the New York Restoration Project, Fort Tryon Park Trust, the Friends of Isham Park, the New Leaf Caf and Conservancy North. There will be a short program at 9:00 AM and the walk will depart at 10:00 AM from the New Leaf Caf.
