COUNCIL MEMBER YDANIS RODRIGUEZ TO STAND WITH RIVERA FAMILY AS JOSBEL RIVERA'S KILLER IS SENTENCED

New York, NY--On Thursday, April 17th, 2014 at 11am, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez will stand with the family of Josbel Rivera as his killer is sentenced in Bronx Criminal Court. The man who killed Mr. Rivera is expected to be charged with anywhere from 1 1/3 years to 4 years for leaving the scene of an accident without reporting. The defendant pled down to this lesser charge in a deal requiring him to apologize for his role in the hit and run death of Josbel Rivera.

Josbel Rivera was killed on the early morning of December 26th, 2011, after spending a Christmas night out with friends. The man driving the car was later spotted parking and lighting the car on fire on a nearby security camera.

Council Member Rodriguez has made the case that laws remain weak when preventing his and runs, with little incentive for drivers to flee a scene of a crash, especially if they are intoxicated. He has sponsored a resolution in the City Council that will call for the passage of state legislation to increase penalties against drivers who flee the scene of a crash.
