Advocates, City Council Members to Hold Hearing, Press Conference on Solving Dramatic Declines in Bus Ridership

Bus Turnaround Coalition To Launch New Interactive Website with Bus Report Cards at BusTurnaround.nyc

New York - On Thursday, October 6th, at 9:00am, the Bus Turnaround Coalition will hold a press conference with members of New York City Council to announce their support for major fixes to our citywide bus network in light of a dramatic year-on-year decline in ridership-despite growth in city population and subway ridership. Following the press event, the Council will hold a hearing on bus service, at which the MTA and DOT are expected to testify.

At the same time, the Bus Turnaround Coalition will publicly release a new interactive website, busturnaround.nyc, which uses MTA data to generate report cards that measure average speed, frequency of bus bunching, and ridership for every bus citywide. Riders will also be able to compare their bus to system averages.

What: The Bus Turnaround Coalition and members of New York City Council will hold a press conference in advance of a City Council hearing on bus service with the MTA and DOT

The Bus Turnaround Coalition comprises In July, the coalition released a report, "Turnaround: Fixing New York Citys Buses," which offers examples of other cities' successes in rethinking bus service and proposes critical changes to the way bus service is designed that would drastically improve the experience of riding the bus and revamp the slow, unreliable, and overcrowded service that has led to a 16% decline in bus ridership from 2002-2015, despite the city's rapidly growing population and surging subway ridership.
