Legislation Will Empower Nearly 2 Million Non-English Speaking New Yorkers Currently Disconnected From City Government
New York, NY - In one of the most diverse cities in the world, where some experts predict that as many as 800 are used, city government has kept English rigidly in place as the only regularly accessible language at public meetings and hearings. On Wednesday, February 24th
, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez and his colleagues will announce the introduction of legislation to require simultaneous translation at city meetings and public hearings. This bill would help the 1.8 million New Yorkers the City classifies as Limited in English Proficiency to better engage their local government.
