COUNCIL TRANSPORTATION CHAIR RODRIGUEZ TO ANNOUNCE LEGISLATION TO COMBAT HIT AND RUNS IN NYC

New York, NY -- With over 1 person killed per week in New York City in hit and run crashes, Council Member Rodriguez will announce several bills, including a hit and run reward fund, aimed at eradicating hit and run crashes from our streets on the steps of City Hall tomorrow. Council Member Rodriguez will be joined by advocates and elected officials supportive of these measures.

This announcement follows the tragic death of radio DJ Jean Paul "DJ Jinx Paul" Guerrero late in 2016, a popular figure on La Mega 97.9 FM. At the time of his death, Council Member Rodriguez announced a reward for information leading the arrest of a suspect, alongside executives from the radio station and fellow elected officials.

Reward funds have been established in other major American cities including Los Angeles, as an important tool to apprehend suspects who kill or seriously injure people before fleeing the scene. When drivers flee the scene of a crash that injures someone instead of reporting it, they can forego the possibility that the victim receives lifesaving treatment, instead leading to their death.

Council Member Rodriguez has previously introduced legislation that would require information about vehicles suspected in hit and run crashes to be posted in taxi tv's.
