NYC COUNCIL TO HEAR LEGISLATION CRACKING DOWN ON HIT AND RUN DRIVERS
COUNCIL TRANSPORTATION CHAIR RODRIGUEZ TO JOIN FAMILIES OF HIT AND RUN VICTIMS INCLUDING RADIO DJ JINX PAUL, LAST VICTIM OF 2016, TO WHOM LEGISLATION IS DEDICATED
New York, NY -- On Tuesday, May 2nd at 12:30pm,
Council Transportation Chair Ydanis Rodriguez will join family members of victims tragically mowed down by reckless drivers who fled instead of calling for help, to push for the swift passage of legislation to be heard immediately after by the
Transportation and Public Safety Committees.
The bills to be heard include Intros 1463 and 1418, which would create an amber alert system so members of the public can inform the NYPD of vehicles involved in hit and run crashes; and establish a reward fund for information leading to the arrest of hit
and run drivers who kill on our streets. New York City would follow cities including Los Angeles with these efforts, aiming to drastically cut down on hit and run crashes and increase arrest & conviction rates.
Nearly 40,000 hit and run crashes occur every year in New York City. 4,000 of those involved people getting injured by vehicles and nearly once a week a person is killed or suffers a life-altering injury. Unfortunately, of the drivers who kill or seriously injure, well under 50% are caught and prosecuted. These bills aim to add more tools to the NYPD's toolbox and increase the number of hit and run drivers captured and convicted.
