UPTOWN RESIDENTS TO PUSH BACK AGAINST ASSOCIATED SUPERMARKET CLOSURE AT PUBLIC HEARING

Associated Supermarket, Vital to Community, Under Threat of Eviction from Landlord Looking to Bring in National Chain Pharmacy

New York, NY--Tonight, uptown residents, elected officials and community leaders will attend a public hearing regarding the possible closure of the Associated Supermarket at 592 Fort Washington Avenue. This supermarket has received an outpouring of support from the local community as well as from citywide elected officials, worried that its closure would create a food desert, depriving the area of affordable options for fresh produce.

It is the one full service supermarket in the neighborhood of Fort Washington. The next closest supermarket is down 11 flights of steps or a large hill and such topographical realities present a challenge to the many seniors living in the area. On January 10th, nearly 300 residents joined elected officials and community leaders to rally in support of the supermarket and warn the landlord that they are in no way supportive of the plans to bring in a Walgreens pharmacy in its stead. Associated Supermarket has served this area for 30 years and residents are also wary of adding a corporate chain pharmacy given that the locally owned Hilltop Pharmacy sits right across the street.
