COUNCIL MEMBER YDANIS RODRIGUEZ TO HONOR ESTIVEN RODRIGUEZ, STUDENT MENTIONED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA DURING THE STATE OF THE UNION

New York, NY--On Wednesday, February 26th, 2014, at 1pm, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez will honor Washington Heights High School Student Estiven Rodriguez for his dedication to educational excellence, his recent acceptance to Dickinson College on scholarship and for his mention in President Obama's State of the Union address.

The son of a Dominican immigrant, Estiven Rodriguez arrived in the United States when he was nine years old. When he entered the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School in the 6th grade, he spoke very little English.  Today, as a high school senior, Estiven is one of the top students in his class (currently ranked #5) and is the recipient of a full-tuition, four-year Posse Foundation scholarship to attend Dickinson College beginning this fall.

His mention in the State of the Union was Estiven's second shout-out from President Obama in as many weeks. The President also mentioned him in a Jan.16 speech at the White House's College Opportunity Summit, which focused on ways to expand access to higher education.
