NYC COUNCIL TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE TO VOTE ON ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING PILOT PROGRAM TODAY

Committee Will Also Hear Legislation to Better Manage Pedestrian Over-Crowding, Allow Bikes to Move on Pedestrian Signals Instead of Stop Lights and More

New York, NY -- On Tuesday, November 15th at 10:00 AM, the NYC Council Transportation Committee will vote on one bill and hear five others related to making our city's streets safer, cleaner and more efficient for all users.

The Committee is set to vote out Intro 1124-A, introduced by Council Members Costa Constantinides and Ydanis Rodriguez, a bill that would create a pilot program for electric vehicle charging stations in each borough. This bill would require that 25 charging stations, including at least two charging stations per borough, be placed throughout the city, with a study to follow on the effectiveness of the program.

Following the vote, the committee will hear the following legislation:
  • Intro 401 - Introduced by Council Member Menchaca, a bill to require a joint study between Parks and the DOT on the feasibility of Citi Bike stations in parks.
  • Intro 1072 - Introduced by Council Member Menchaca, a bill to allow cyclists to follow pedestrian signals instead of traffic lights, making cycling safer at dangerous intersections.
  • Intro 1285 - Introduced by Council Member Rodriguez, this bill would require a study by DOT on the 10 most crowded sidewalks in NYC as well as possible solutions to overcrowding.
  • Intro 1177 - Introduced by Council Members Rosenthal and Ydanis Rodriguez, this bill would require the DOT to examine the feasibility of the Barnes Dance style crossing, a crosswalk that allows pedestrians on every corner to cross simultaneously while all cars are stopped. Pedestrians can cross diagonally as well.
  • Intro 1117 - Introduced by Council Member Van Bramer, this bill would extend safety requirements currently governing all commercial cyclist employees to cover independent contractors as well.
