Aviation Firsts at Paris Air Show
Honeywell announced its Green Jet Fuel has successfully powered the first transatlantic biofuel flight, which landed at Paris-Le Bourget Airport in time for the Paris Air Show. The flight, involving a Gulfstream G450 business jet, traces almost exactly the same flight path as Charles Lindbergh in 1927 when he completed the world's first non-stop trans-Atlantic flight in his Spirit of St. Louis.
Rockwell Collins avionics, including the GPS-4000S GPS Sensor and GLU-925 Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR), are contributing to the validation of the first pan-European satellite navigation system, which will offer pilots more direct routes, greater runway capability and reduced separation standards. The new European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) landing procedure was recently published for Le Bourget airfield in Paris, marking the third French landing procedure based on EGNOS.
LightSquared Proposes New Broadband Network Plan to Move Farther Away from GPS Frequencies
After preliminary test results showed that wireless broadband network company LightSquared's network would interfere with GPS signals, the company issued a press release on Monday announcing a "comprehensive solution" to GPS interference worries posed by its planned broadband network. The plan, according to the release, involves moving its operations to a lower band that is farther away from GPS frequencies and modifying its FCC license to reduce the maximum power of its base stations by "over 50 percent," limiting it to the power it was authorized to use in 2005. Two Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittees are conducting an oversight hearing today, June 22, to examine potential impacts on U.S. aviation safety in light of pending government action that may affect GPS reliability.
