Letter From the Editor / Update From the European Chapter
of the Academy for Eating Disorders / New AED Members
| | |
Dear AED Community,
I hope this finds you all safe and healthy as we head into the holiday season. Although it feels like we just wrapped the International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED) 2025, the Board is already working diligently to prepare for our next annual meeting in The Hague, Netherlands in June 2026. For more information on what you can expect, important dates, and scholarship information for ICED 2026, please head to the Academy’s website.

In this issue of the newsletter, the European chapter of the AED gives an important update on the current state of the chapter and what you can expect from it going forward. We welcome new chapter co-chairs, Karin Waldherr and Annemarie van Elburg, and give a glimpse into how they plan to carry forth the legacy of the chapter. For any of our European members interested in getting involved, please visit the chapter’s page on the AED website for more information.

Also in this issue of the newsletter is an updated survey asking for your feedback on how to make the newsletter as relevant and helpful a resource to you as possible. It’s a short survey - only four questions - and your feedback is highly valued. Thank you in advance for taking a couple of minutes out of your busy schedules to complete the survey.
| |
As always, if you have any comments or questions that you would like to address directly to me, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’ll catch you again in the New Year!
Warm regards,
Andie Chilson

Update from the European Chapter
of the Academy for Eating Disorders
| | |
The European chapter of the Academy for Eating Disorders (ECAED) was conceived at the International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED) 2017 in Prague, and held its first conference in 2018 in Rome. The first chair was Ashish Kumar, followed by Umberto Nizzoli and Yael Latzer. During these early years, the chapter grew steadily, organizing European meetings and laying the important groundwork for a large-scale survey that later merged with another survey initiative from the Partner, Chapter, and Affiliated Committee (PCAC). This collaboration eventually grew into the AED Global Survey, which is now being concluded under the leadership of Kristin von Ranson.
| | |
Over the past seven years, the ECAED has established a visual identity, expanded its online presence, created a website, and published multiple newsletters. Since its creation, the chapter has delivered webinars featuring international expertise on adolescent treatments; professional burnout; the intersection of eating disorders and obesity; new legislation on treatment and rehabilitation; and the effects of war-related stress.
A new organizational structure for the AED chapters has been implemented and the leadership baton for the European chapter has now been passed on. As of September 2025, Karin Waldherr and Annemarie van Elburg will serve as co-chairs. They will launch bimonthly meetings on the first Wednesday of even months, starting in December 2025 at 20:00 Central European Time (+1 UTC). European AED members interested in joining are invited to participate. The new co-chairs aim to build on the chapter’s established foundation, supporting the AED’s mission and strategic goals in Europe and reinforcing the chapter’s role within the broader AED network.

Since its birth, the ECAED has created a stable European platform for collaboration, research exchange, advocacy, and training, offering a strong base for its next phase of development. Under the new co-chairs’ coordination, ongoing projects, including the Global Survey Project, will continue, ensuring continuity and further development. Building on the chapter’s strong foundation, they aim to continue promoting the AED’s mission and vision in Europe, contributing to strategic goals and strengthening collaboration among professionals, families, and volunteers across the continent.
