From Our Executive Director
|
I always enjoy looking through our newsletter and being reminded of the opportunities and promise that surround us every day. This month, especially, reminds me that it is never too soon or too late to start a business, address a critical community issue, or learn more about the support and assistance that is out there for those who need it.
We have our youngest entrepreneurs and grown-up community members starting new businesses, we have a community initiative designed to foster a healthier community for us now and into the future, and we have a community forum designed to give even the most experienced entrepreneurs more insight into the support and resources out there for them.
Our area is full of opportunities. Embrace them!

North Coast Event Charters
|
|
AEDC’s newest client offers a red-carpet entertainment experience for weddings, corporate events, tourism, and more through a personalized, one of a kind luxury limousine service in Humboldt County. The new company’s 10-passenger Mercedes-Benz 2500 Sprinter Limousine features a full length stainless steel mirrored ceiling w/fiber optics, Double J-Seat, full service solid wood bar, two TV's, premium stereo system, touch pad controls, transit wood flooring, USB outlets, and privacy partition divider.
“My inspiration for North Coast Event Charters was a reoccurring theme in the business community that we lacked quality transportation—but I didn't want to be just another driver,” explained company founder Steven Boehl, ”I envision using my limo to connect people with the high quality of services Humboldt has to offer and embarked on this journey to bring luxury transportation to Humboldt.”
Boehl has a commercial class "B" drivers license with a passenger endorsement- and will be the company’s first driver. “If the business is doing well, eventually I plan to hire more drivers and office personnel,” he added.

Mary Elise Conzelmann
AEDC’s Lemonade Day Coordinator, graduated this month from Humboldt State University with a B.A. in Recreation
Administration. She plans to move to the East Bay area in July to pursue a Masters in Business Management at Saint Mary's College of California.
According to AEDC Program Coordinator Susan Seaman, 2019 will be the second year Elise has coordinated the county wide event and her loss will be felt next year. “Mary Elise brought energy and enthusiasm, infusing our local event with the inspiration we needed to keep Lemonade Day strong and vibrant in our community,” Seaman said.
“I love connecting the youth in our community with hands-on learning experiences,” Mary Elise added. “Lemonade Day participants inspire me with their enthusiasm, dedication, and critical thinking skills they apply to their business plans and stands. I appreciate our community for embracing the Lemonade Day program and all of the residents who support the young entrepreneurs by buying lemonade.”
In addition to pursuing her masters, while in the East Bay area, Mary Elise will also intern for the Rails to Trails Conservancy

Collin McKune
Collin Mckune, a student in Humboldt State University's Rural Sustainability Class, assisted AEDC in preparing for its inaugural Workforce Weekend by reaching out to applicants and employers before the event and conducting follow-up surveys.
“I believe my experience working on Workforce Weekend will help me adjust to a business environment in regards to communication and work ethic,” Collin observed. “The work was enjoyable and helped me learn how to approach both businesses and users of a service for information, while also teaching me how to obtain feedback through survey creation and constant communication with our users.”
Collin is an economics major with a business minor. He plans to graduate next spring and hopes to work in market analysis or data entry for a small business.
“I cannot say enough about the contribution students like Collin can make to support local projects while learning from experience and enriching their education along the way,” noted Susan Seaman. “I so appreciate Collin's support on Workforce Weekend.”

Caring for Children in Humboldt
|
|
On May 1, AEDC Program Manager and Eureka Mayor Susan Seaman launched the Children and Families Mayor’s Initiative, which is intended to better address the needs of the community’s children. According to Seaman, the initiative will support increased communication and collaboration between families, childcare agencies, other service providers, city staff and more – with priorities including improving access to safe and affordable childcare
“AEDC Board member Kathy Montagne did a presentation years ago that addressed the fundamental need for quality childcare and other core services and how a lack of access detrimentally affects families, our community and the economy,” explained Seaman, “These issues are critical and our challenges in this area affect everyone.”
Seaman’s initiative plans to tackle pressing issues at both local and state policy level. “For example, a recent change in the city’s zoning will make it easier to start small family child care programs within Eureka City limits," she said.

SBA 504 Current Rate:
4.39%
- Low down payment for borrowers
- Competitive fixed interest rate
- Long Term loan
- From $50,000 to $5 million for commercial real estate, construction and equipment acquisition.
Many commercial loans available on the market require a sizeable percentage down before the loan will be granted, and this can be an obstacle for many business owners looking to improve their facilities. The SBA 504 Loan offers a solution for that -- you can borrow up to 90% of your financing needs at a fixed rate, so only a minimum of 10% down is required.
The remainder is split between the SBA loan (40%) and a bank loan (50%), and the Arcata Economic Development Corporation will work with your bank to submit your loan application. Loan amounts range from $50,000 to $5 million, and some restrictions apply.
For more information, call Kelli Sterling, Loan Manager: 707-798-6132 ext. 212 or email kellis@aedc1.org.
