Project Seed Funding at NAIT | |
|
NAIT's Centre for Grid Innovation would like to announce a research and development opportunity with our Project Seed Funding grant program. The program aims to stimulate innovation initiatives in Alberta's energy sector. Specifically, the program's mandate is to stimulate projects related to the following: green-house gas reductions, energy efficiency, grid electrification, alternative energy, microgrid implementation, smart grid technologies, etc. Successful candidates would see their $5,000 cash contribution matched with a minimum of $32,500 and up to $50,000.

Building Innovation Reference Centre | |

SSRIA has recently launched the Building Innovation Reference Centre. This searchable online reference centre contains detailed data, information and results from building demonstration projects currently being supported by SSRIA. The projects include diverse building types and innovative solutions that reduce a building's energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. This reference source will continue to grow through to the end of 2023 as projects move through their construction phase and into monitoring so be sure to keep checking back.

FortisAlberta Launching its First Electric Vehicle Smart Charging Pilot in January 2023
FortisAlberta will launch its first Electric Vehicle (EV) Smart Charging Pilot project in January 2023. As more customers choose to drive EVs, the overall demands on the electric grid will increase and become a challenge for distribution utilities. FortisAlberta is interested in understanding how EV owners are charging their vehicles and the impacts of EV charging on our electricity distribution system. We are looking for up to 600 EV owners who live in FortisAlberta’s service territory to participate in our pilot.

Waterton Battery Energy Storage System Now in Service
Waterton Lakes National Park is a staple of Alberta’s tourism industry and welcomes nearly a half-million visitors each year. The sensitive, forest-heavy environment has meant that electricity has long been delivered by a single 70-kilometre distribution line with the most frequent and longest outage durations than any other area in FortisAlberta’s service territory.
The Waterton Energy Storage Project was operationalized in September 2022. It has been a partnership with Natural Resources Canada’s Smart Grid Program, Emissions Reduction Alberta and Alberta Innovates. Through the use of a battery energy storage system, solar photovoltaic renewable generation, integrated with FortisAlberta’s advanced control systems, Waterton can now maintain power during an outage by switching to solar-generated electricity. The on-site solar panels are owned by Parks Canada and are projected to reduce greenhouse emissions to the area by 25 per cent.

How democratization of customer data is reshaping the clean energy landscape | |
If one thing has become clear in the energy transition, it’s that we are now operating on a different playing field, under a different set of rules. Achieving the bold commitments that most utilities have embraced around energy savings, carbon reduction, and overall resource sustainability will no doubt require accessing and collaborating with today’s broad and increasingly complex ecosystem of new market participants.
This means utilities will need to literally ‘meet customers where they are’- connecting seamlessly with 3rd party solutions that are accounting for an increasingly large and growing share of the customer’s energy experience.
