Deed Over Creed: Ethical Action
|
|
While it looks like this country is going backward when it comes to protecting our democratic rights and freedoms, it's natural to feel pessimistic. However, democracy is bigger than one politician or one party; it's a system of governance run by the people, for the people. That means there is a lot that you can do to help this country live up to the ideals that it stands for. Not sure where to start? Our friends at the Ethical Action Committee put together a list of actions to pursue. Have any ideas that you want to add? Email the EAC Chair (Carolyn A. Parker) at ethical-action.chair@aeu.org. Remember, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing. So, do your part in bringing this country back into the light by doing your part. We can't wait to hear all about it.

Society name: Brooklyn Ethical Culture Society
Year it was founded: 1906
Current president: Tom Castelnuovo
What Ethical Culture means to your society:
"In general usage in our society, ethical culture means to (re)establish soundness and integrity both in our interpersonal as well as our institutional relationships. Our aim is to provide a concrete foundation in the thinking of our members towards all of the aspects of their daily lives, to improve and live the best possible “self” they can be. Touching our institutions can be challenging, but at BSEC, with our collaborative inter-relationships – yes, we are still trying to improve internal and external communications – we reach each other and policy-makers to influence issues which are pertinent to us. It is not always smooth, but enough of us feel that this movement towards “the good/decency in us and the good/decency in others” is worthy of our being tenacious and working out our differences to a common and positive outcome."
An example of what you're doing to address a key issue affecting your community:
"An example of what your society is doing to address a key issue affecting your community: The Ethical Action Committee is fused with Lucy’s Children (LC) at BSEC. Almost by definition, we are multicultural in committee make-up and focused particularly on Black life in America. What comes to our interest, we bring forward for the group. LC is a learning and discussion vehicle to do all of the following:
- De-construct the notion of race, spreading the “news” that there is absolutely no scientific explanation for “race” as it is a social construction based on cultural and environmental factors active, in particular, over the last 60,000 years
- Learning about different cultural and political events through the lens of history and critical analysis into the current period;
- Participating in advocacy events and partnering with like-minded organizations to effect change in public policy; our interests include, but are not exclusively some of the following: climate change, abortion rights, immigrant rights, and the rights of children.
- Lending support financial and physical to projects and issues to the best of our ability under our internal circumstances
- Encourage good citizenship by our members and our community"
