February 2021
On Super Bowl Sunday, we premiered our video for the Empty Bowls Virtual Event! This video features an AFAC update from Charles Meng, Executive Director & CEO, a cooking demonstration by Grace Abi-Najm Shea from Lebanese Taverna Group, and a reflection of our previous Empty Bowls events from the words of Empty Bowls Committee members and attendees.

Special thanks to TD Bank for being the title sponsor of this event for the 3rd year in a row! Thank you to all of our sponsors, who are listed below. In case you missed the event, the video can be watched here on our website.
AFAC Updates
New AFAC Distribution Site
At the beginning of February, we opened a new offsite food distribution site at AHC's facility, The Apex! Opening this new food distribution site allows us to serve residents in need at The Apex with healthy supplemental groceries.
Plot Against Hunger Program Moves to Arlington FOUA
This month, AFAC will transition ownership of its Plot Against Hunger program to the Arlington Friends of Urban Agriculture. “AFAC is grateful to have sponsored and grown the Plot Against Hunger program for so many years, and for the many thousands of pounds of fresh produce provided to our families, thanks to a large network of gardens and dedicated volunteers,” said Charlie Meng, AFAC’s Executive Director & CEO. “I look forward to continuing our support as the program finds a new home with Friends of Urban Agriculture.” Click here to read the full press release.
Oh Boy!
Our staff member Mathilda welcomed a new addition to her family - a baby boy named Emmett! Before she went on leave, we surprised her with cookies and decorated her office. Congrats to Mathilda and her family on a wonderful new bundle of joy!
Volunteer News
Parking Update
Across from AFAC, construction at Jennie Dean Park has begun. Its parking lot has been closed, as well as access to 27th St. from S. Nelson St. If you are coming to volunteer at AFAC's warehouse, parking options are limited. You can park at the dog park at the end of S. Nelson St. (2 hours, half are metered), on Four Mile Run, or on the 3rd floor of the parking garage behind Harris Teeter in the Village of Shirlington (marked as Public Parking).
Thank You
Thank you to everyone who continues to support AFAC during this difficult time for many in our community. Your food and monetary donations and volunteer efforts are making an impact and helping us feed our neighbors in need.
Thank You to our Empty Bowls Sponsors!
