January 2021
Thank You & Happy New Year!
We are extremely grateful for all of our volunteers who continue to help us serve all of our families in need. We would like to take this moment to recognize 12 volunteers who have served over 100 volunteer hours at AFAC since July! Thank you so much to Doris Bennett, Terese Brewster, Lee Clarke, Hal Creel, Les Davison, Diana Gordon, Amy Haas, Sarah-Kate Hawkins, Catherine Kitchell, Jeff Lynn, Randy Randall, and Michael Stutts for your continued dedication!
Empty Bowls Virtual Event
February 7, 11:30am
Due to the pandemic, our annual Empty Bowls event will be held virtually on Sunday, February 7 at 11:30am. Click here for more information. Thank you to our event sponsors (listed at the bottom), including our title sponsor, TD Bank, who will be the title sponsor for the 3rd year in a row!
AFAC Featured on BBC World News
In case you missed it, BBC World News stopped by AFAC at the end of December to see how we are serving the increasing number of people in need with groceries during the pandemic.
Giant's Community Bag Program
For the month of January, when you buy a reusable bag from the Giant Food near Bailey's Crossroads (3480 S. Jefferson St in Falls Church), $1 gets donated to AFAC through their Community Bag Program! Thank you Giant for your continued support of AFAC!
Volunteer Needs
Client Surveys
We'll be conducting our annual client surveys between February 1 through February 20. We'll be adding spots on the volunteer calendar, specifically for Spanish-speaking volunteers. Helping out just once or twice really makes a difference. Our client surveys are a great opportunity for us to get feedback about how we're doing and what improvements we can make in the coming year to provide supplemental groceries in a dignified manner. If you have any questions, send an email to volunteer4afac@afac.org.
Offsite Distribution Help
One of our partner agencies at The Carlin Senior Apartments is seeking three strong volunteers to assist with their weekly AFAC food distribution on Thursdays from 10am – 12pm. If you're interested, contact Olivia Ferrante at Olivia.Ferrante@rhf.org.
Special Thanks
Thank you to everyone who has hosted or donated to one of the many food drives over the holidays! Food drives are essential in helping us feed our families in need.

Special thanks to Arlington County's Parks and Recreation Department for monitoring food collection boxes at community centers. Over two weekends (December 12-13 & MLK weekend), 4,491 lbs of food was collected! Also, thank you to all of you who participated with Volunteer Arlington's MLK Day of Service, which helped collect 1,904 lbs of food donations.
